Job Summary

UPMC is seeking a highly skilled Patient Services Representative to join our team. As a Patient Services Representative, you will play a critical role in ensuring that patients have a positive experience at UPMC physician practices, hospitals, and outpatient surgery departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Exceptional Patient Care: Welcome patients upon arrival, promote the use of new technologies, educate patients on their financial obligations, and collect payments when applicable.
  • Schedule Appointments: Schedule subsequent appointments within the continuum of care, connect patients to financial advocacy resources when necessary, and update patient demographics and insurance coverage information.
  • Assist with Administrative Duties: Assist with scanning of medical records, faxing, and other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Guide Patients through Self-Service Technology: Guide patients through the use of self-arrival technology or check-in patients at the desk, depending on patient preference.
  • Schedule Ancillary Services: Schedule or connect patients to resources to schedule for ancillary services at checkout.
  • Understand Service Recovery Principles: Understand the principles of service recovery and take appropriate action to recover from service that does not meet the expectation of the UPMC Experience.
  • Assist with Financial Education: Assist patients in education of financial responsibility and connect them to advocacy resources as needed.
  • Obtain Patient Consent: Obtain signature of patient or family member for consent to treatment and financial responsibility, following HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Verify Insurance Benefits: Confirm/verify insurance benefits with the appropriate carrier via online verification systems or telephone inquiries.
  • Promote Patient Portal: Promote MyUPMC patient portal and assist patients in registration when applicable.
  • Collect Patient Payments: Collect copayments and any other applicable patient payments at the point of service.
  • Provide a Warm Greeting: Provide a warm greeting for all patients.
  • Register Patients in Biometrics Program: Register patients in Biometrics (fingerprint recognition) program and explain benefits.
  • Update Patient Registration Information: Confirm and/or update patient registration information at checkout.
  • Triage Phone Calls: Appropriately distribute/triage phone calls to other areas and/or clinical providers.
  • Schedule Follow-up Appointments: Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience with Medical Terminology: Experience with personal computer-based applications, other various office equipment, and proficient typing skills are preferred.
  • Medical/Billing/Fiscal or Customer Service Experience: Two years of experience in a medical/billing/fiscal or customer service function is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology: Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Experience with Health Records Systems: Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems is preferred.
