Position Overview: The Evidence Management Specialist (EMS) collaborates closely with laboratory leadership, including supervisors and managers, as well as various technical and administrative staff. This role is pivotal in ensuring expert management of evidence, overseeing the receipt, cataloging, storage, and proper disposal of items submitted for forensic toxicology analysis.
About the Division:
The Washington State Toxicology Laboratory Division (TLD), established in 1963, is responsible for conducting drug and alcohol testing for a range of stakeholders, including law enforcement, medical examiners, and the State Liquor and Cannabis Board across all counties in Washington. Annually, the Division processes approximately 16,000 cases, with a significant portion being law enforcement DUI cases.

Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the processing of evidence by receiving and releasing items to law enforcement representatives.
- Accurately assign case numbers and create electronic case files within the laboratory database.
- Ensure the integrity of the chain of custody for all evidence.
- Input evidence data into the computerized laboratory system.
- Store evidence in accordance with established protocols.
- Facilitate the release of evidence to forensic scientists and back to submitting agencies as required.
- Oversee the disposal of evidence following WSP procedures.
- Maintain comprehensive case files and transaction records for all evidence.
- Conduct regular inventories and audits of evidence.
- Provide administrative support as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
The EMS operates within a Toxicology Laboratory setting, where adherence to safety guidelines for handling hazardous materials is crucial. Candidates must be prepared to engage with cases involving sensitive and potentially traumatic circumstances.
Schedule:
This position typically involves eight-hour workdays from Monday to Friday, with potential flexibility subject to management approval.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED and a valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to obtain one shortly after employment.
Conditions of Employment:
Successful candidates will undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation, and will be required to provide an oral DNA sample for the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
