Position Overview

The Certified Sterilization Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the cleanliness and safety of surgical instruments and equipment. This position involves the thorough decontamination and preparation of all surgical trays and tools utilized within the facility. The technician is responsible for the timely reprocessing of instruments between surgical procedures, maintaining the integrity of the pack cart, and conducting regular equipment inspections, including autoclave quality assurance programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively cleans and decontaminates all surgical instruments, ensuring that each tray is complete and correctly labeled for processing.
  • Prepares small or peel-pouched supplies for safe sterilization and storage.
  • Exhibits knowledge of cleaning and sterilization methods in accordance with industry standards and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the operation of sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners, adhering to established protocols.
  • Ensures efficient processing of instruments between surgical cases and at the conclusion of the schedule.
  • Returns sterilized instruments and trays to their designated storage areas post-processing.
  • Regularly inspects trays and sterile equipment for expiration or compromised packaging.
  • Maintains the pack cart, communicating restocking needs and replenishing supplies as necessary.
  • Conducts daily and weekly quality assurance testing, maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Assists clinical staff with the upkeep of physician preference cards and instrument inventory.
  • Communicates supply needs for quality assurance and processing tasks.
  • Performs assigned housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe environment, including regular cleaning of scrub sink areas.
  • Distributes packs for sterilization processing.
  • Provides assistance to visitors, staff, and physicians, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Acts as a knowledgeable resource for staff regarding instrumentation and sterilization techniques.
  • Adheres to safety guidelines for exposure to blood and body fluids, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, contributing to the evaluation and enhancement of care processes.
  • Engages in staff meetings and educational opportunities to stay informed and compliant.
  • Maintains all necessary certifications and demonstrates competence in emergency situations.
  • Prioritizes responsibilities to ensure optimal patient care while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Exhibits the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, paying close attention to detail and adapting to the needs of the team.
