About the Role

Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans (MPI) is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Retirement Benefits Director to join our Senior Leadership Team. This key role is responsible for overseeing the retirement benefits department, managing staff, and ensuring the smooth operation of our pension functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual processes, including 1099R, state tax reporting, retirement seminars, and tax and annuity table updates.
  • Review and approve benefits processes, calculations, and disbursements, including retirements, minimum distributions, QDRO, and annuity conversions.
  • Lead and manage teams involved in benefit inquiries, application fulfillment, reconciling, and producing monthly pension disbursements.
  • Hire, train, coach, develop, and provide performance management to a team of 25.
  • Resolve benefit and payment issues and assist with participant counseling on complex and/or sensitive cases.
  • Develop and present retirement education materials to participants, including contributing articles to the quarterly participant newsletter.
  • Direct and assist in the handling and preparing of benefit appeals to the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure delivery of excellent participant services by providing guidance, training, and development of team members.
  • Perform complex benefits analysis and approve payment actions.
  • Work with IT to maintain cyclical processes, including payment reconciliations, quarterly state filings, annual 1099R IRS filings, and supporting reports for Form 5500 filings.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 7+ years of multi-employer pension benefit experience, including pension processing, third-party administration, or Taft-Hartley experience.
  • Progressive level of management experience, including at least 7+ years leading and managing staff at all levels.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, and a proactive approach to building working relationships with all levels of personnel and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with changing priorities, communicate changes in process or benefits, and adhere to reporting and other deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and high standards in quality and accurate reporting.
  • Strong leadership traits to inspire and motivate the team, embracing diversity of thought, background, and experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency level in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and a working knowledge of multi-employer DB and DC recordkeeping systems, such as Sagitec or Vitech V3.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience working in a union environment a plus.
