Muscatine Community School District is seeking a Culinary Services Associate II to join our team at Muscatine High School. This role is designed for a full-time commitment of 7.5 hours per day, typically from 6:30 AM to 2 PM, although this may vary based on departmental requirements. The Culinary Services Associate is engaged during the academic year, working approximately 9 months while school is in session. All essential duties are to be performed on-site. Bilingual candidates are preferred. Positions remain open until filled.

The starting compensation for this role is $14.19 per hour.

All employees are required to undergo a background check and complete pre-employment training and orientation with the Human Resources Department prior to hiring. Below is a comprehensive overview of the responsibilities and requirements for the Culinary Services Associate II position.

POSITION TITLE: Culinary Services Associate II (Production/Satellite)

EMPLOYEE UNIT: Food and Nutrition

REPORTS TO: Food Service Manager/Supervisor/FNW III

STATUS: 9-month position

Normal Work Day: Shifts and days may vary by location and position

OBJECTIVE:

To effectively manage assigned tasks under the guidance of a supervisor, adhering to the policies and procedures established by the Food Service Department.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The Culinary Services Associate II is not an entry-level role. Responsibilities may differ based on the specific location and the experience of the staff present, but typically include the following:

  • Assisting in the setup of service areas and portioning or serving food items.
  • Operating cash registers and computers, as well as completing production records.
  • Cleaning and storing utensils, dishes, trays, pans, and other kitchen equipment, along with maintaining cleanliness in the work area.
  • Assisting in food preparation, including cooking breakfast items, cleaning and preparing fruits, salads, and vegetables, as well as making sandwiches.
  • Utilizing various kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, ovens, and other cooking appliances.
  • Helping to manage food and supply costs through proper handling, rotation, and storage techniques.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and maintaining positive public relations with students, parents, faculty, and the community.
  • Processing cash transactions and managing SNAP transactions as needed.
  • Supervising Food Service Worker I employees when necessary.
  • Providing backup support for the Head Cashier (FNW III) in their absence, which may require flexibility in work hours.
  • Participating in the rotation of schedules to ensure all employees share responsibilities.
  • Managing waste disposal duties.
  • Serving as a backup for the SNAP operator when required.
  • Performing additional related duties as assigned.
LOCATION: Duties may require assistance across various District buildings as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Customer service orientation and organizational skills are essential.
  • A genuine interest in working with children from PreK-12.
  • Basic computer proficiency is required.
  • Understanding of USDA Food Service Requirements.
  • Familiarity with the SNAP Computer Food Service System.
  • Commitment to attending workshops for certification and maintaining knowledge of kitchen operations.
  • Comfortable using kitchen equipment such as ovens, stovetops, and dishwashers.
  • Adherence to safety and sanitation protocols, including wearing appropriate uniforms and footwear.
  • Strong safety awareness is crucial.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bilingual skills are preferred. Candidates must become certified through the School Nutrition Association, with certification courses provided at no cost. Completion of a standardized assessment by the Food and Nutrition Department is required. All Culinary Services workers must complete a Food Service Sanitation course within the first ninety (90) days of employment. It is mandatory for workers assigned to production or bulk satellite kitchens to complete applied food service sanitation, fundamentals of child nutrition, and principles of food preparation courses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands for this position include the ability to stand for extended periods, walk frequently, and lift materials weighing between 40 and 50 lbs. The role requires bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting as part of daily tasks.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is typically quiet, with the expectation of professional working hours that may extend beyond a standard workday. Employees will work in various areas, including kitchens and service areas, and may need to access freezers and coolers as part of their duties.
