We are a prominent General Contractor specializing in Commercial Construction, seeking a Senior Cost Estimator with a robust background in bidding for commercial construction projects. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience and a keen understanding of the estimation process.


Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Vice President.

Position Objective: The primary goal of this role is to deliver precise and timely cost estimates for construction projects, leveraging project drawings, specifications, and a comprehensive understanding of construction practices and profitability objectives. The Senior Cost Estimator will also provide consultancy support to business development and project management teams.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough reviews of construction project plans, specifications, and requirements.
  • Perform site visits to gather critical information regarding site access, service availability, surface topography, and drainage.
  • Compile and analyze data that may impact cost estimations.
  • Engage with clients to assess their requirements effectively.
  • Execute quantity take-offs to prepare accurate estimates.
  • Ensure timely preparation of detailed estimates and related documentation for bids.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation in line with company standards.
  • Participate in presentations for project delivery and business development.
  • Generate Requests for Information (RFIs) to clarify bid documents.
  • Define the scope of work in contract documents and manage subcontractor bidding processes.

Subcontractor Management:

  • Proactively solicit and pre-qualify subcontractor partnerships.
  • Utilize available information to create a comprehensive list of qualified bidders.
  • Coordinate the distribution of blueprints and drawings to subcontractors and collect bids.
  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals and analyze potential risks.

Post-Award Responsibilities:

  • Conduct interviews and select successful subcontractors.
  • Manage the buyout process and draft subcontracts.
  • Prepare essential information for in-house pre-construction meetings.
  • Review forecast reports and provide input to the Project Manager.
  • Remain engaged throughout the project, assisting the Project Manager with subcontractor relations.
  • Collect historical cost data as the project progresses.

Customer and Vendor Relations:

Foster positive relationships with customers, subcontractors, and vendors through fair and transparent dealings. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by:

  • Identifying and rectifying errors, including those made by others.
  • Demonstrating a proactive approach to acquiring new skills.
  • Recommending procedural enhancements.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of successful experience in commercial and/or retail estimating for a general contractor.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a proactive attitude.
  • Willingness to travel for pre-job meetings, site visits, and client interactions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, as well as estimation software such as Primebid and Timberline.
  • Ability to interpret various levels of drawings from conceptual to construction phases.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical capabilities.

Physical Requirements:

This role requires the ability to navigate job sites that are in pre-construction or under construction phases.
