PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Battalion Chief of EMS Training, this role involves instructing and mentoring personnel within the Fire Division. The position includes facilitating EMS training for both new recruits and lateral transfers. Responsibilities encompass assessing students' clinical competencies and critical reasoning abilities essential for course completion. The instructor may recommend disciplinary actions, including class expulsion when necessary. Adjustments to course materials, presentations, or curricula will be made based on the needs of upcoming classes. The role also includes liaising with healthcare facilities to coordinate clinical assessments. Instruction will cover foundational education for fire department staff, including Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT), and paramedics. A strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and their implications is required. The instructor will collect fees for continuing education and ensure timely submission of funds to the finance department. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the development of training modules and instructional guides, evaluating their effectiveness, and implementing necessary revisions. Maintaining accurate training records and providing management updates is essential. The position requires travel throughout the city to engage with various fire stations and attend relevant meetings.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • May perform other essential or non-essential functions as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The individual must communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Proficiency in operating equipment such as computers, telephones, radio systems, and audiovisual tools is necessary. The role requires the ability to perform current paramedic procedures, including assisting in lifting and transporting individuals and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties are carried out in classroom settings, field locations, and office environments. The instructor may encounter infectious diseases and extreme weather conditions. Collaboration with hospital staff during emergencies is a key aspect of the role. Availability for weekend and occasional evening work is required.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of an Associate's degree from an accredited institution and two years of experience as a paramedic is required. Candidates must possess a Paramedic Instructor Coordinator endorsement prior to application. A valid Paramedic License from the State of Tennessee, free from denial, suspension, or revocation, is essential for continued employment. A valid driver's license is also required. Certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) are highly preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is mandatory.
