Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY:

The primary responsibility of this role is to facilitate patient processing efficiently, assist healthcare providers and patients, while maintaining confidentiality regarding agency and client information.

ASSESSMENT SCOPE:

Collect demographic and financial data for billing purposes, measure height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure, and document findings for provider evaluation. Collect urine samples, perform throat cultures, and conduct fingerstick blood sugar and hemoglobin tests. Gather information regarding the reason for the visit and patient allergy history.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is full-time, requiring 37.5 hours per week. Part-time hours may be assigned by the Health Center Director. Occasional unscheduled overtime may be necessary due to staffing needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Medical Assistant Certification
  • Proficient in triage skills
  • MMR and TB vaccinations
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Excellent communication skills for interactions with clients, providers, and colleagues
  • Professional telephone etiquette
  • Current CPR (BLS) certification
  • Bilingual/Bicultural Spanish is advantageous

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Process and manage patient intake, including vital signs (BP, weight, height, pulse, and temperature)
  • Document patient information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), including vitals, social history, and lab results
  • Conduct routine diagnostic tests in accordance with established protocols
  • Perform urinalysis, hematocrit, Hb A1c, blood glucose, lead tests, and pregnancy tests
  • Operate and maintain clinical equipment
  • Ensure proper sterilization of instruments
  • Prepare patients for examinations and tests
  • Dispose of medical waste and sharps appropriately
  • Update and register patient information
  • Schedule and confirm appointments
  • Verify insurance eligibility
  • Document accurately in the EMR
  • Maintain cleanliness and stock in examination rooms
  • Assist healthcare providers as needed
  • Notify appropriate personnel regarding supply needs
  • Secure the department at the end of the shift, ensuring equipment is unplugged, medication cabinets are locked, and lights are turned off
  • Demonstrate computer literacy for necessary paperwork and documentation
  • Complete lab and state transmittals as required
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

CONFIDENTIALITY:

This role involves full access to client medical records and limited access to financial/statistical information. It is imperative to maintain client confidentiality in accordance with State and Federal laws and organizational policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires moderate physical activity, including walking, standing, sitting, bending, and occasional lifting. Frequent use of phone, writing, typing, and verbal communication is necessary. Responsibilities include sterilizing instruments and cleaning examination areas as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. There is potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials, necessitating adherence to universal precautions. Ability to lift up to 20 lbs is required.
