Position Overview: We are seeking applications for a pivotal role in software engineering and sustainable software development, aimed at enhancing a FAIR and energy-efficient computational research initiative that significantly influences major research infrastructures across particle physics, astronomy, and related fields.
Role Responsibilities: This position offers a diverse and stimulating work environment where you will engage in a supportive interdisciplinary setting. You will contribute to the European-funded EVERSE project, playing a key role in promoting and implementing best practices of software excellence among researchers coding across various European Science Clusters. Your responsibilities will include:
- Profiling and enhancing selected particle physics software pilots in alignment with FAIR principles and energy sustainability.
- Benchmarking and selecting optimal hardware platforms for computational tasks.
- Training and mentoring fellow researchers in software development best practices.
Candidate Requirements: Applicants should possess a strong academic background, ideally a BSc (Hons) or MPhys (or equivalent) in computing or a scientific discipline, with a preference for computer science, physics, or astronomy. Essential qualifications include:
- Demonstrated leadership experience in diverse software systems.
- Proficiency in software development across multiple programming languages, particularly C++ and Python.
- Experience with various computing architectures beyond CPUs.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the software life cycle across multiple projects.
- Familiarity with development best practices, including version control and release management.
Desirable Skills: Candidates with experience in Open Science and sustainable software initiatives, machine learning workflows, and handling confidential data formats will be favored. Additional experience in software training, consultancy, and collaborative projects involving multiple partners and sites is also advantageous.
