Position Overview:

The United States Institute for Theatre Technology is seeking a dedicated Technical Director to oversee the technical aspects of theatrical productions. This role is essential in ensuring that all scenic elements are constructed and installed according to the designers' vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Interpret and execute the designs provided by Scenic Designers;
  2. Create detailed construction drawings for each scenic component;
  3. Collaborate with the Production Manager to budget the design and maintain financial constraints;
  4. Source and acquire materials necessary for construction;
  5. Construct all scenic elements for productions;
  6. Manage the scene shop as a versatile space for building, painting, and rehearsals;
  7. Engage in regular meetings with the Production Manager and other department leads throughout the production timeline;
  8. Facilitate the loading in and out of scenery from various locations;
  9. Install scenic elements within the theatre environment;
  10. Oversee the dismantling of scenery and restoration of the theatre to its original state;
  11. Lead additional crew members during load-in and strike operations;
  12. Participate in training and team-building activities;
  13. Maintain tools, manage inventory, and oversee facility upgrades;
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will possess:

  1. A minimum of three years of professional experience in a technical direction role;
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of theatrical production processes, carpentry, and scenic construction;
  3. Proven ability to manage and adhere to budgetary constraints;
  4. Expertise in the use and maintenance of power tools;
  5. Strong computer proficiency, particularly in CAD software and Microsoft Office;
  6. Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze information efficiently;
  7. Capability to collaborate in group settings to resolve challenges;
  8. Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure and work with diverse teams;
  9. Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs independently and collaboratively;
  10. Comfort with working at heights and on ladders;
  11. Excellent communication and leadership abilities;
  12. A flexible, motivated, organized, and responsible work ethic;
  13. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
