Clinical Specimen Collection Specialist Position
Overview:
The clinical specimen collection specialist is accountable for the proper distribution of samples to relevant departments and the appropriate preparation of specimens for laboratory evaluation.

A Day in the Life of a Clinical Specimen Collection Specialist at MyMichigan Health:
(25%)* Deliver exceptional customer service by fostering positive relationships with patients during invasive procedures. Address the needs of customers of all ages and assist in resolving exceptions. Help maintain laboratory market share through direct, professional communication with patients, physicians, nurses, medical departments, and outreach customers. Educate patients and other laboratory clients on proper testing protocols.
(25%)* Accurately interpret physician orders to collect high-quality specimens.
(25%)* Execute invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro-capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable), and other testing procedures on patients of all age groups by adhering to precise protocols and procedures, including patient preparation prior to testing and administration of various glucose dosages.
(25%)* Manage specimens including the selection of the appropriate specimen type to ensure high-quality, reliable test results. Ensure the timely distribution of specimens to minimize turnaround time, thereby reducing expenses within medical departments and enhancing patient care. Communicate with and prepare specialized specimens for shipment to reference laboratories. Maintain specimen integrity.
Certifications and Licensures:

Valid Driver's License requiredEquivalent Experience:
To operate the company vehicle, must meet eligibility under the medical center insurance guidelines.
Required Education:
High school diploma required
Completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical (on-the-job) experience.

Responsibilities:
Adhere to patient registration procedures where required.
Follow strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens.
Demonstrate proficiency in infection prevention and control practices and policies.
Adhere to hand hygiene policies and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Computer Skills:
Familiarity with multiple functions in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), and reference lab computers.
Utilize the LIS computer to schedule workload and inpatient rounds, interpret test orders and input them into the system, retrieve billing information, assist with patient registration, and communicate test results according to strict confidentiality standards.
