POSITION SUMMARY

The Governmental Accounting Specialist is responsible for executing professional accounting functions within a governmental framework, utilizing generally accepted accounting principles to generate, assess, and present financial data. This role includes reconciling accounts, preparing financial statements and reports, and managing general ledger entries. The Specialist will also conduct month-end closures and perform account analyses, while assisting in the year-end audit process and supporting various departments with financial record maintenance, expenditure monitoring, and resolving account discrepancies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities outlined below are not exhaustive and may be adjusted as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversee multiple fund accounting with comprehensive account analysis.
  • Prepare interim and year-end adjusting journal entries.
  • Complete month-end closures, including journal entries, reporting, and account analysis.
  • Prepare audit documentation and assist in the creation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Collaborate with independent auditors throughout the audit process.
  • Monthly reconciliation of various general ledger accounts to subsidiary ledgers and external statements.
  • Reconcile monthly sales and use tax revenues and generate reports for financial reporting.
  • Maintain awareness of internal and external environments, identifying emerging demands and opportunities, and utilizing resources to address them.
  • Prepare monthly internal and external billing statements.
  • Provide departments with analytical reports to support decision-making.
  • Maintain accounting records for the City's foundations.
  • Process and upload multiple invoices for Accounts Payable.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist other departments with the testing and implementation of new financial systems and upgrades, including employee training.
  • Support payroll and accounts payable processes, providing backup as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business

Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years in governmental accounting

Certifications and/or Licensures: None

Required Driver's License: None

An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant job experience may be considered.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is conducted in a standard office environment, necessitating prolonged periods of sitting and occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs.). The role requires visual and physical capabilities to operate computers and related equipment for extended durations.

SALARY RANGE

$59, $88,892.00/Annual
