Position Overview:
Under the guidance of experienced personnel, the candidate will participate in an accredited basic police training program to acquire the essential knowledge, skills, and physical abilities required for effective law enforcement duties. This role encompasses various responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. The following criteria must also be met:

  • Minimum age of 20 years at the time of appointment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory.
  • Applicants may not hold current certification or eligibility for certification by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).

Working Conditions:
While fulfilling the responsibilities of a trainee, individuals may encounter a variety of challenging environments, including adverse weather, extreme temperatures, elevated locations, and exposure to hazardous materials. The nature of police work may also involve dealing with emotionally charged situations, including interaction with injured or traumatized individuals.

Physical and Psychological Requirements:
Candidates must demonstrate the physical health, strength, and agility necessary to meet the demands of law enforcement, as evaluated through a physical agility assessment and medical examination in accordance with MCOLES standards. Vision must meet current MCOLES criteria, including color, binocular, and peripheral vision. Psychological fitness for police work will be assessed through a psychological evaluation as mandated by MCOLES.

Evaluation Process:
All candidates will undergo a written examination (pass/fail) and an oral assessment, which will be weighted at 100% in the selection process.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
Selected candidates must complete a comprehensive medical examination, including a back screening and physical assessment, along with a drug screening conducted by a designated physician prior to commencing employment. Employment offers are contingent upon the satisfactory results of these evaluations.

Background Checks:
Applicants may be subject to a post-offer criminal background investigation, with employment offers contingent upon the findings of this review. Candidates must successfully complete a probationary period for their appointment to be considered permanent.
