Description of Work

Under direct supervision, participates in an accredited Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) basic police academy to acquire the essential knowledge, skills, and physical abilities necessary for police service; performs related responsibilities as required.


Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent is necessary.
  • No specific work experience is required.
  • Must be at least 20 years old at the time of appointment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • A valid Michigan Driver's license and a safe driving record are required.
  • Must
    not be Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certified or certifiable.

Physical Conditions / Work Location

While fulfilling the duties of a recruit, the individual may encounter actual and simulated scenarios for educational purposes involving adverse weather conditions, extreme heat, high precarious locations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, risk of electrical shock, explosives, bodily fluids, and other hazards associated with crime or accident scenes, as well as other extremely dangerous situations.

The noise level in the work environment can vary from quiet to very loud.

Individuals in this role may also face extreme emotional distress, including interactions with injured, abused, traumatized, or deceased individuals.

Physical health, strength, and agility are essential to meet the physical demands of police work, as determined by a physical agility test and medical examination based on current MCOLES guidelines.

Candidates must meet current MCOLES vision standards, including those for color, binocular, and peripheral vision.
Psychological suitability for police work will be assessed through a psychological examination as required by MCOLES.

Oral Examination - 100%

The selected candidate must undergo a post-offer medical examination (including back screening and a complete physical) and drug screening test conducted by a City-appointed physician before commencing employment.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.

Applicants for City employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position.

When such a check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment is considered permanent.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification within the City system.

For each opening, the Department Head has the discretion to choose from candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains effective for up to one year unless exhausted or extended.

Fitness Club & Weight Watchers Reimbursement

The City reimburses up to $25 monthly for fitness club & Weight Watchers memberships for employees who attend at least 8 times per month for fitness, and at least 3 times per month for Weight Watchers.

Home Ownership Program

The City matches $2000 down payment of a home, an additional $2500 match for purchasing a home in certain blighted neighborhoods, and an additional $3000 match for homes in certain blighted neighborhoods that require more than $25,000 in repairs or new construction.

Vacation

Vacation accrual begins on the first day of hire. Eligibility for use begins after 6 months of service.

Accrual begins on the first day of hire; eligibility for use begins after six months of service has been met

Sick Leave Accrual Cash Out

Employees who accumulate sick leave are eligible to "cash out" a portion of their accumulated sick leave for a percentage of cash payment or full payment into any of the retirement savings programs funded through the City of Muskegon.

Eligible upon hire; length of time varies depending on the relationship of the deceased, and provided the employee attends the funeral.
