Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced ESOL Instructor to join our team at The New York Public Library. As an ESOL Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching English language classes to adult learners, promoting English language proficiency and digital literacy, and assisting in the managed enrollment process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Instruction
    • Teach ESOL classes to adult learners, promoting English language proficiency and digital literacy
    • Develop and implement lesson plans that align with the prescribed curriculum
    • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences, leading to the achievement of their educational and personal goals
  • Student Support and Services
    • Assist in the managed enrollment process, recruiting students and maintaining student records
    • Provide support and guidance to students, addressing their individual needs and concerns
  • Professional Development and Collaboration
    • Participate in prescribed professional development, staying up-to-date with adult basic education and Library strategic priorities
    • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement effective teaching strategies and materials
Requirements
  • Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
  • Skills and Qualifications
    • Minimum 1 year of experience teaching adults in both in-person and online settings
    • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work well with a variety of people in a multicultural setting
    • Ability to meet deadlines for administrative tasks
Work Environment

The New York Public Library is a dynamic and inclusive work environment, committed to providing high-quality services to our diverse community. As an ESOL Instructor, you will work in a public library setting, teaching classes in one of our Adult Learning Centers or public library spaces.

Physical Demands

The position requires the ability to lift up to 20 pounds, set up and disconnect laptop computers to projectors, and distribute course textbooks.

FLSA Status

This is a non-exempt position.

Schedule

Hourly ESOL Instructors provide instruction in 3, 10-week instructional cycles in the fall, winter, and spring, and a 4-week summer cycle. Additional hours may be available between instructional cycles to assist with new student testing and placement.
