Position Summary

The Medical/Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting patient care under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals. This position involves various patient care responsibilities, including traveling to multiple locations within the metropolitan area.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Services

  • Venipuncture and Specimen Handling: Conduct venipunctures and finger stick procedures. Process various specimens, including blood, urine, and stool, adhering to established practice protocols.

Quality Assurance and Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform quality control assessments. Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment as necessary.

Vital Signs Monitoring and Patient Triage:

  • Measure and document vital signs. Assist in the triage process for patients.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Execute other clinic-related tasks as assigned.

Patient Admissions:

Vital Signs Documentation:

  • Accurately measure and record vital signs, including weight, height, pulse, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure.

Documentation and Physician Assistance:

  • Complete medical assistant rooming notes for each visit. Assist physicians during examinations, including necessary procedures.

Patient Transport and Communication:

  • Facilitate patient transport using wheelchairs when required. Manage routine follow-up calls and appointment scheduling.

Indirect Patient Care Activities:

Supply Management:

  • Oversee and ensure the availability of patient care supplies.

Appointment Scheduling:

  • Coordinate patient appointments and arrange tests and procedures as directed by physicians.

Chart Management:

  • Prepare patient charts for physician visits, ensuring all results are included prior to appointments.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform various tasks to support clinic operations and enhance patient care.

Direct Patient Care

The Medical Assistant is responsible for admitting patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, and processing laboratory samples according to established protocols. They monitor and report any deviations from normal ranges and update patient records accordingly. The MA assists physicians by preparing patients for examinations and ensuring all necessary equipment is available.

During patient discharge, the Medical Assistant ensures follow-up appointments are scheduled as instructed by the physician and assists patients in navigating the treatment process.

Laboratory Services

The Medical Assistant is tasked with obtaining laboratory testing orders and determining the appropriate tests to be performed. They collect samples, ensuring proper labeling and storage, and communicate any changes in lab requirements to the nursing staff.

On-site testing is conducted according to established policies, and results are documented accurately in patient charts. The MA manages laboratory supplies and performs routine maintenance on testing equipment.

Clinic Support Services

The Medical Assistant oversees biohazardous waste management and conducts inventory checks to maintain necessary supplies.

Telephone Support

In the absence of the receptionist, the Medical Assistant provides backup support by managing incoming calls and ensuring effective communication within the clinic.
