Position Summary

We are looking for a seasoned Electrical Project Engineer IV with a robust background in electrical engineering, particularly in power distribution system design and instrumentation and control systems tailored for water and wastewater facilities. The ideal candidate should possess at least 5 years of relevant experience in projects involving water treatment, wastewater treatment, pumping stations, water storage and conveyance, as well as wastewater collection systems. Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with U.S. codes and standards are critical for this position. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, linked to our San Diego or Arizona offices.

Salary Range: $95,000-$120,000 annually *

*Compensation will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design electrical power distribution systems from the utility meter to electrical loads ranging from 120V to 15KV for water and wastewater facilities, ensuring compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other relevant codes, under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer.
  • Develop designs for utility service entrance sections, switchboards, switchgear, motor control centers, standby power transfer switches, generator systems, panelboards, grounding, and lighting specific to water and wastewater facilities.
  • Create single-line diagrams, power plans, control schematics, hazardous location plans, and conduit block diagrams.
  • Design instrumentation and control systems, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), motor controls, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, SCADA systems, and communication networks.
  • Conduct engineering calculations such as load summaries, breaker sizing, generator sizing, lighting calculations, conduit sizing, conductor sizing, voltage drop, and short circuit current analysis.
  • Identify hazardous locations per NFPA 820 and NEC 500, documenting them clearly on hazardous location plan drawings.
  • Provide electrical and controls engineer's opinion of probable cost estimates.
  • Review shop drawings, respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), and prepare engineer's clarifications for electrical, instrumentation, and controls aspects.
  • Perform field inspections and oversee the start-up and commissioning of electrical and controls equipment.
  • Customize specifications for electrical, instrumentation, and controls to align with project requirements, starting from standard guide specifications.
  • Generate and refine electrical, instrumentation, and control system drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Conduct field inspections to evaluate electrical, controls, and instrumentation systems across various projects.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical engineering, focusing on power distribution system design and instrumentation and control system design for water and wastewater facilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Ability to design electrical power distribution systems from the utility meter to loads ranging from 120V to 480V for water and wastewater facilities, adhering to NEC and other applicable codes, under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.
  • Strong capability to design P&IDs, controls, and communication networks based on previous project examples with minimal supervision.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical and controls drawings and specifications, with the ability to review most electrical, instrumentation, and controls shop drawing submittals independently.
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. codes and standards, including the NEC and NFPA 820.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively and within budget.
  • Exceptional communication and teamwork skills, fostering positive relationships with supervising engineers, colleagues, clients, external firms, and vendors.
  • Adherence to E, I&C team design standards and company CAD standards.
  • Willingness to travel approximately once per month, if required.
  • Demonstrated pride and ownership in all work produced.
  • Open to constructive feedback and committed to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and active personal automobile liability insurance from the first day of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Progressing towards obtaining an Electrical Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience designing electrical power distribution systems from the utility meter to loads ranging from 480V to 15 kV for water and wastewater facilities, ensuring compliance with NEC and other applicable codes.
  • Experience in designing instrumentation and control systems, including P&ID development, motor controls, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, SCADA systems, and communication networks.
  • Ability to customize specifications for electrical, instrumentation, and controls with minimal supervision, starting from standard guide specifications.
  • Familiarity with SKM software for conducting power system studies is advantageous.
  • Experience in reviewing and interpreting power system studies.
  • Experience in witnessing the start-up and commissioning of electrical and controls equipment.
  • Experience in electrical and instrumentation construction observation and inspection.
