Position Overview

Exceptional underwriters possess the ability to merge data analysis with instinctive judgment. As an Underwriter specializing in casualty insurance, you will evaluate risks and provide recommendations for underwriting decisions, receiving support and guidance from leadership as necessary, while honing your underwriting expertise and cultivating essential internal and external relationships.

The Underwriter, Major Accounts Risk Management is tasked with developing, expanding, and sustaining a profitable and diverse portfolio of loss-sensitive primary casualty business, concentrating on Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Commercial Auto. This will be achieved through effective marketing, informed underwriting decision-making, fostering mutually beneficial relationships with agents/brokers, and utilizing underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establishes and nurtures relationships with key external stakeholders (brokers, agents).
  • Oversees a portfolio of brokers/agents in areas where policy complexity and line size are relatively consistent.
  • Enhances underwriting skills and collaborates with internal stakeholders and partners (e.g., Underwriting Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting), leveraging an understanding of how these teams collaborate to inform underwriting decisions.
  • Continues to develop underwriting expertise using both internal and external resources. Executes and may contribute to marketing strategies.
  • Participates in team initiatives (e.g., process/tool enhancements). May assist in analyzing the team's portfolio.
  • May oversee the quality of data within relevant systems for the book of business managed by the team.
  • May provide on-the-job training for new team members.
Qualifications

A degree in Business or a related field is typically required. A minimum of 1 year, preferably 1.5 years or more, of underwriting experience and/or related business experience is essential. Actively pursuing professional insurance designations is encouraged. The ability to successfully cultivate and maintain effective internal and external relationships is crucial. Demonstrated analytical skills to assess and evaluate underwriting risks within defined authority are required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to develop and sustain productive relationships with producers/customers. When applicable, successful completion of relevant certifications is expected.
