As a Senior Underwriter in casualty insurance, you will cultivate, expand, and oversee a substantial, intricate, and diverse portfolio of business while collaborating closely with brokers and clients to evaluate risks, establish premiums, set conditions, and negotiate agreements that optimize profitability and align with business objectives.
The Senior Underwriter, Major Accounts Risk Management is tasked with developing, expanding, and maintaining a profitable and diverse portfolio of loss-sensitive primary casualty business, focusing on Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Commercial Auto. This is achieved through effective marketing, sound underwriting decisions, fostering mutually beneficial relationships with agents/brokers, and utilizing underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources. You will also guide and mentor less experienced underwriters in your area of expertise, providing regular coaching and feedback to management regarding employee progress.
This role is hybrid, allowing for a blend of in-office and remote work.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversees a portfolio of brokers/agents and clients, leveraging market expertise to develop and underwrite profitable business while representing Liberty Mutual.
- Maintains relationships with senior and market-leading brokers and key agents.
- Ensures a strong market presence, including established connections with agents and brokers.
- Aims to enhance existing relationships and cultivate new ones.
- Communicates key coverage distinctions with a high level of detail.
- Contributes significantly to business and marketing planning processes, providing advanced data-driven insights from portfolio analysis.
- Participates in cross-departmental projects aimed at enhancing underwriting and process excellence.
- Models effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and partners.
- Possesses strong knowledge of relevant legal cases, legislation, and regulations impacting underwriting expertise.
- Shares knowledge based on technical expertise, providing external thought leadership.
- Mentors, coaches, and trains other underwriters and internal partners.
- A degree in Business or a related field is typically required.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive underwriting experience, typically 10 years or more, is expected.
- CPCU or another professional insurance designation is preferred.
- Demonstrated analytical ability to assess and evaluate underwriting risks within the scope of responsibility.
- Proven capability to communicate complex analyses and information clearly to others in the organization for underwriting or training purposes.
- Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills when engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
- Must exhibit comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and be adept at defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows.
- Documented success in developing and underwriting profitable business.
