Summary

Under the guidance of the Field Operations Supervisor, the Senior Water Service Technician is tasked with managing vehicle assignments and job responsibilities. This role involves addressing customer water service inquiries and investigating high bill complaints. The technician is responsible for executing all assigned work orders and engaging directly with customers to communicate findings from inspections of metering equipment and other factors influencing water usage. This position requires making informed decisions regarding the information provided, work conducted, and customer interactions to achieve fair resolutions to complaints.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completing daily work assignments efficiently.
  • Conducting thorough field inspections of metering equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Performing maintenance or replacement of water meter registers and endpoints as necessary.
  • Inspecting water meter connections for leaks and executing repairs as needed.
  • Interrogating endpoints/transmitters to verify readings align with registers, adhering to quality assurance standards.
  • Assessing field conditions to identify irregularities that may lead to excessive consumption or unexplained usage, and documenting findings.
  • Recording notes on findings, actions taken, and customer interactions on completed service orders.
  • Educating customers on the operational aspects of water meters and radio transmitters.
  • Analyzing billing history to determine if complaints stem from changes in charges, rates, or service fees, and informing customers of the results.
  • Communicating Charlotte Water's practices regarding meter reading and billing processes, including responsibilities for service repairs on private property.
  • Completing all assigned service work orders within designated timeframes while accurately documenting water meter readings and relevant notes.
  • Investigating customer complaints related to high meter readings, noise, leaks, water quality, and pressure issues, escalating matters as necessary.
  • Reporting deficiencies in meter vaults or service line repairs promptly.
  • Conducting preventative maintenance and daily inspections of vehicles and field equipment, reporting any malfunctions.
  • Reporting leaks in fire hydrants, water mains, and other distribution issues in a timely manner.
  • Performing additional tasks and duties as assigned or required.

  • Familiarity with water utility operations.
  • Understanding of customer service principles.
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to read maps effectively.
  • Capacity to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Skill in maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to follow directives and instructions accurately.
  • Capability to work independently.

Physical Demands:

This position requires light physical work, including the ability to lift up to 60 pounds. Additional physical abilities necessary for this role include frequent entry and exit from a vehicle, balancing, crouching, manual dexterity, and the ability to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels.

Work Environment:

The work environment is dynamic, necessitating adaptability to changing goals and priorities. Responsibilities include outdoor work in various weather conditions, proximity to traffic, and tolerance for natural elements such as pollen, dirt, and insects. Flexibility to work overtime and weekends may be required, along with readiness to respond to emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience, preferably in customer service and water utility operations.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • AWWA Meter Technician Certification is preferred.

Salary

$45, $50,731.00, commensurate with experience.

Conditions of Employment

Background checks are mandatory for final candidates, including reference checks, social security verification, education verification, and criminal record checks. Compliance with federal and state statutes is required. Final candidates must also pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical examination.
