About the RoleAs a Paralegal / Legal Assistant III, you will support the overall mission of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) by conducting financial investigations and providing analytical services in the collection of criminal monetary penalties and civil debts. You will draft and/or prepare letters, forms, & reports to initiate the collection of debts, obtain & analyze financial information on debtors, and conduct interviews of debtors and agency officials to assist with the action of pursuing legal action against debtors.
Responsibilities- Conduct financial investigations and provide analytical services in the collection of criminal monetary penalties and civil debts.
- Draft and/or prepare letters, forms, & reports to initiate the collection of debts.
- Obtain & analyze financial information on debtors.
- Conduct interviews of debtors and agency officials to assist with the action of pursuing legal action against debtors.
- Prepare and organize evidence and discovery to support debt collection.
- Monitor the progress of pending cases to ensure legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, & other documents are prepared & submitted in a timely manner.
- Draft & prepare legal & administrative briefs, motions, foreclosures, garnishments, & other legal actions for review by AUSA.
- Analyze and interpret tax records and credit bureau reports to assess collectability and trace assets such as real property and personal accounts.
- Use multiple databases and research references such as agency manuals, directives, issuances, court reports, appellate records or legal publications to obtain data related to public records information, judgment and lien information, Secretary of State records, and publicly filed financial information.
- Conduct interviews of debtors, third parties, employers, and agency officials to determine the effectiveness of pursuing legal action against debtors in default.
- Independently prepares a variety of substantive legal documents to include various complaints, motions, judgments, garnishments, and other legal actions to affect necessary pre- and post-judgment action regarding debts owed to the U.S. government to be reviewed prior to filing.
- Paralegal Certificate with at least one-year paralegal experience; or High School Diploma/GED with at least three-years' paralegal experience.
- One-year of automated litigation support experience with knowledge of the capabilities and use of automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and prosecution of federal cases.
- Knowledge of forfeiture law, policies, and procedures and trial experience preferred.
- Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methods of legal research and analysis sufficient to perform case development and documentation assignments which are typically covered by established precedents.
- Excellent communication skills; oral and written, to include legal writing skills.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and other common software applications, to include databases.
- Proven commitment and expertise to provide excellent customer service; positive and flexible; ability to multi-task.
- Ability to work in a team environment, deliver the highest quality of work, and maintain a professional disposition under extreme pressure.
This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation.
