What You Will Do:

The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) within Pit Technologies is composed of a diverse team of engineers and scientists dedicated to supporting plutonium initiatives, including production, surveillance, research & development, and subcritical experiments across the entire Pit Technologies Division.

The PT Division is in search of Systems Engineers to deliver engineering analysis support for all production activities. This encompasses intricate modeling of production processes such as metal refining, melting, casting, heat treatment, forming, machining, and welding. Additionally, comprehensive analytical support is required for the design and development of all PT tooling, fixtures, and new custom process equipment.

The selected individual will undertake detailed analyses addressing a broad spectrum of complex challenges, necessitating solutions that are innovative, thorough, practical, and aligned with organizational goals. The analysis tasks will range from straightforward problems requiring classical hand calculations to advanced system-of-systems analyses. The analyst will be responsible for completing and documenting their work within the agreed budget and timeline. Furthermore, the chosen candidate will be expected to present their findings for peer reviews and serve as a peer reviewer for the work of other engineers.

What You Need:

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Proven experience in complex modeling and simulation (SysML, SymPy, etc.)
  • Capability to set up, execute, debug, validate, and interpret results of failure mode and effects analyses, fault tree analyses, etc.
  • Familiarity with commercial applications such as Cameo
  • Strong documentation skills; proven ability to document technical results in a formal method/format
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Proficiency in applying fundamental techniques and engineering best practices
Q Clearance:

This position necessitates a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in very rare circumstances. Selected candidates will undergo a background investigation conducted by, or on behalf of, the Federal Government for access to classified materials.

Education/Experience:

This role requires a bachelor's degree in Aero or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • A Master's or PhD Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Proficient understanding of systems engineering fundamentals
  • Demonstrated experience in process modeling
  • Experience with mechanical testing (e.g., structural, thermal, fluid flow) to support model validation, including experiment design, planning, organization, execution, data reduction, and data correlation
  • Understanding of validation and verification methods
  • Fundamental understanding of mechanical design engineering and the design process
  • Proficiency in utilizing Python, MatLab, etc.
Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
