Critical Care Registered Nurse - Multispecialty Unit

POSITION SUMMARY
The patients in the Multispecialty Unit encompass a diverse range of medical and cardiac conditions.

Common diagnoses include various medical issues, STEMI cases, post-catheterization lab procedures, heart/lung transplant evaluations, and advanced heart failure management.

This is a full-time role eligible for benefits.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
BLS/ACLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications are mandatory. CCRN and BSN are preferred.
Graduation from an accredited nursing program is required.

A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a registered nurse (RN) in a critical care or intensive care unit (ICU) is essential; two (2) years or more is preferred.

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Texas Board of Nursing or a multistate license from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state is necessary.
Availability to work some weekends is required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts and accurately documents comprehensive physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria (children, adolescents, adults, and older adults).
  • Proactively anticipates the needs and expectations of patients and their families, integrating these insights into the development of an effective care plan. Employs critical thinking in planning and prioritizing nursing care while maintaining competencies as per unit expectations.
  • Identifies and executes appropriate nursing interventions based on completed assessments, ensuring timely and accurate documentation. Acts as a key coordinator of the interdisciplinary care plan, collaborating with all healthcare team members to advocate for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Prioritizes nursing interventions based on assessments, promptly recognizing changes in patient conditions through nursing evaluations, lab results, and imaging studies. Reports changes and takes appropriate follow-up actions, actively involving patients in their care plans and keeping them and their families informed.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions and adjusts care plans accordingly, documenting all interventions and modifications accurately and promptly.
  • Adheres to hospital and Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted nursing standards. Incorporates ANA standards into the delivery of safe, quality patient care, utilizing current literature and research. Practices in alignment with the Professional Practice Model "Relationship Based Care" and the Care Delivery System "PACE" - Patient Focused, Accountable, Coordinated, Continuous, and Evidence-Based.
  • Provides timely and appropriate education to patients, families, and caregivers, ensuring thorough documentation of all educational interactions, including discharge planning. Assesses understanding and obtains feedback from patients and families regarding their care.
  • Welcomes and orients patients and their families to the unit, encouraging active participation in care. Reviews personalized care plans with patients and families at each shift, updates care boards, and sets daily goals with patient input. Clearly explains special diets, tests, procedures, and medications in understandable terms. Conducts hourly rounds on patients and communicates expected return times.
  • May perform one or more of the following core functions: a) Direct patient interaction or care; b) Interaction with human-subjects research participants; c) Regular maintenance or modification of patient records; or d) Regular maintenance or modification of human-subjects research records.
  • Other Duties: Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily conducted in a hospital setting. The role may involve exposure to bodily fluids and infectious diseases. Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment physical examination, including color vision testing.


Any qualifications considered as equivalents to the stated minimums require prior approval from the Vice President for Human Resources Administration or their designee.
