Critical Care Registered Nurse - Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Nights)

POSITION SUMMARY
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a specialized, high-acuity area dedicated to critical care. Our patient population encompasses complex surgical cases including liver transplants, vascular procedures, otolaryngology, surgical oncology, urology, and emergency surgeries.

As a member of the Surgical Services team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, you will engage in unique medical procedures, enjoy stable patient volumes, benefit from supportive leadership, and have access to various committee opportunities.


SICU RNs are scheduled for 12-hour shifts, either day (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM) or night (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM), including every other weekend. This is a full-time position that offers comprehensive benefits.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • At least one year of experience in Critical Care or ICU nursing
  • Current Texas RN license or Compact State license with multistate privileges
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from an accredited provider
  • Strong customer service skills, problem-solving abilities, and sound judgment
  • NIHSS and BSN are preferred but not mandatory

RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Critical Care RN, you will:
  • Conduct thorough physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria.
  • Anticipate the needs of patients and their families, using this information to develop tailored care plans.
  • Employ critical thinking in planning and prioritizing nursing care, maintaining competencies as per unit expectations.
  • Identify and implement appropriate nursing interventions based on assessments, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate patient care effectively.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient conditions, taking appropriate follow-up actions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and modify care plans as necessary.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and nationally accepted nursing standards.
  • Provide education and support to patients and families, ensuring understanding and compliance with care plans.
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives, contributing to a safe and high-quality care environment.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Other responsibilities may include:
  • Participating in peer evaluations and providing constructive feedback.
  • Actively engaging in team meetings and community outreach.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
