Job Summary:

As a Sterile Processing Manager at Kaiser Permanente, you will oversee the services and departments responsible for providing patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation reprocessing functions. This includes collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and distribution. You will manage the surgical instrument inventory and supplies, ensuring departmental activities run smoothly. As a subject matter expert, you will provide guidance on product reprocessing needs and develop and ensure compliance with departmental budget. You will also manage fixed departmental equipment and plant property, working collaboratively with other departments and units to ensure efficient, safe, and effective instrument and equipment availability.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Supervise SPD technicians and staff to achieve established operational performance and quality goals.
  2. Manage all aspects of sterile processing, including collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, distribution, and inventory management.
  3. Maintain continued education and proficiency in sterile processing operations and equipment through education, literature, and seminars.
  4. Serve as a technical expert regarding product reprocessing, decontamination, and sterilization for the facility.
  5. Demonstrate correct department processes and procedures to staff.
  6. Ensure optimal sterile processing performance through quality control and quality assurance of all sterile processing activities and equipment.
  7. Monitor and report equipment operational status.
  8. Recommend equipment changes, upgrades, and additions to meet manufacturers' instructions for use (IFU) for all items processed.
  9. Assure departmental standards of operation and policies are in compliance with regulatory and professional agencies, including CMS, TJC, AAMI, AORN, and APIC.
  10. Facilitate the recruitment and selection of department staff.
  11. Provide staff with ongoing feedback and document appropriately, including performance evaluations.
  12. Develop a comprehensive departmental orientation for new staff.
  13. Routinely coordinate training and competency validation for all staff.
  14. Ensure staff work is performed within prescribed technical and safety standards.
  15. Provide or coordinate instructions and in-service on new products, procedures, and equipment to identify and prevent resource loss and maintain patient and staff safety.
  16. Ensure staff attend technical and mandatory training/education.
  17. Schedule staff and work to ensure cases have instruments and equipment when needed.
  18. Monitor and adhere to labor and expense budgets.
  19. Maintain reports in appropriate cycles for department performance and staff attendance.
  20. Develop and submit department budget to the Director of Perioperative Services.
  21. Responsible for maintaining fiscally responsible practices and meets budget expectations.
  22. In collaboration with Facilities Maintenance Department, establish a preventive maintenance program for Sterile Processing equipment.
  23. Maintain adequate inventory of equipment to meet Medical Center requirements.
  24. Provide ongoing and effective communication with physicians, hospital/clinic department management, staff, and vendor representatives.
  25. Represent department/Surgical Services by attending appropriate department, facility, and regional meetings.
