Position Overview:

AARP's Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) is dedicated to upholding the dignity and rights of at-risk seniors aged 60 and above, offering complimentary legal and social work services to those in need. Our mission empowers, defends, and protects thousands of clients annually across various civil law domains.

The Veterans Legal Advocacy Fellow will engage in legal research, draft legal memoranda, conduct client interviews, assess their legal challenges, and identify the necessary support. This role primarily collaborates with attorneys in the Veterans Advocacy Project (VAP), providing direct representation for veterans and their spouses concerning veterans' benefits, VA-related services, public assistance, and community outreach initiatives. The Fellow will also support operations at our VAP community clinics as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct casework under attorney supervision, which includes gathering facts and evidence, searching for records, requesting documentation, performing research, and contacting potential clients and witnesses for information.
  • Execute legal research, prepare legal memoranda, and assist with client-related tasks on individual case representation, systemic issues, or special projects.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive records in the case management system regarding cases managed.
  • Develop educational materials and engage in clinics, community outreach, and workshops as requested.
  • Facilitate the dissemination of legal information through speaking engagements, workshops, self-help seminars, and other public awareness efforts.
  • Provide additional litigation support as necessary.
  • Incumbents may perform a combination of duties based on operational assignments.

Qualifications:

  • A completed bachelor's degree.
  • At least one year of study completed at an accredited law school, with ongoing academic enrollment throughout the fellowship.
  • A demonstrated commitment to public interest law.
  • Current or former military experience is advantageous.

  • Ability to exhibit respect and understanding to maintain professional relationships.
  • Independent judgment in evaluating options to make informed decisions.
  • Capability to work effectively in an open office environment with moderate noise levels.

Compensation and Benefits:

The hourly compensation for this position is $21. Internships are classified as non-exempt and do not qualify for employee benefits.

Work Environment:

AARP designates Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work is permitted only within the United States and its territories.
