The ACLU of DC is seeking a dedicated law student or recent law graduate for a one- or two-year fellowship commencing in the fall of 2025. As an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, our mission is to safeguard civil liberties and civil rights through legal action, legislative advocacy, and public education.
Our office primarily addresses issues that affect individuals residing in, working in, or visiting the District of Columbia, while also tackling specific federal policies and practices that fall under the jurisdiction of D.C. federal courts.
Current Initiatives:
- Advocating for civil rights demonstrators in response to law enforcement actions.
- Representing individuals facing discrimination in remote work policies.
- Challenging the D.C. police department's retention of arrestees' cell phones.
- Addressing hostile work environments for employees subjected to harassment.
- Contesting advertising guidelines that limit First Amendment rights.
- Promoting institutional reforms for mental health crisis responses.
Fellowship Responsibilities:
We are looking for a passionate law student or recent graduate who is committed to defending civil rights. The selected Fellow will work full-time within the ACLU of DC Legal Department, under the guidance of experienced civil rights attorneys who are dedicated to providing thorough mentorship and feedback.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting legal research to support ongoing and prospective litigation.
- Interviewing witnesses and potential clients.
- Investigating cases through public records requests and community interviews.
- Managing discovery processes and drafting legal documents.
- Collaborating with the Policy Department on advocacy efforts related to legislation.
- Assisting with community outreach and Know Your Rights training sessions.
Fellows have previously had the opportunity to lead their own cases, testify before legislative bodies, and represent the ACLU of DC in various media outlets.
Fellowship Duration: The length of the fellowship will be determined by mutual agreement between the ACLU of DC and the selected candidate.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary is set at $67,500 per year, with benefits that include employer-sponsored health insurance (including vision and dental), paid vacation and sick leave, generous holidays, a 401(k) plan with partial employer matching, and tuition reimbursement assistance. The Fellow will be part of the ACLU of DC staff bargaining unit and is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The ACLU of DC operates as a hybrid-remote workplace, requiring some in-person attendance. Candidates must reside in the D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area to be eligible for employment.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a J.D. by the start of the fellowship from an accredited law school.
- Demonstrated passion for civil rights and civil liberties advocacy.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with clients and community members.
- Excellent work ethic, with the ability to manage multiple projects and see them through to completion.
- Receptive to feedback and committed to personal and professional growth.
- Proficient legal research skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to perform thorough legal analysis and construct persuasive arguments.
- Strong legal writing skills, capable of presenting complex ideas clearly.
- Prior experience in a clinical or externship setting involving litigation.
- Must be a member of the D.C. Bar by the start of the fellowship or plan to seek admission.
