We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Patient Care Technicians to support our teams in various units within our Oakland, PA location. As a Patient Care Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our hospital.

About the Role

This is a valued step in the UPMC Patient Support Career Ladder. The title and starting pay rate may vary based on years of experience. Patient Care Technician level candidates will be considered for this role, with a minimum pay rate of $17.78.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team and demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.
  • Care for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace and developing productive working relationships.
  • Suggest and support changes within the department, assuming responsibility for assignments and viewing problems as challenges.
  • Perform patient observations, utilize crisis interventions, and conduct safety and environmental rounds.
  • Establish professional and respectful interpersonal relationships, contributing to universal unit activities.
  • Participate in self-review and provide direct patient care as directed by the RN, maintaining an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery.
  • Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment, delivering patient nourishments and filling water pitchers.
  • Perform UPMC nursing core responsibilities, including ADLs, point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention, and urine specimen collection.
  • Provide diversional activities to reduce or prevent the use of restraints and document in the medical record according to established procedures.
Qualifications

Patient Care Technician BH Fellow:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Patient Care Technician:

  • Must also have either a) 1 Year of Experience, OR b) enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR c) completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
