About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Mammography Technologist to join our team at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems. As a Mammography Technologist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform mammography exams using digital mammography equipment
  • Determine radiographic technique exposure factors
  • Perform radiography of pathologic breast specimens
  • Provide or assist with physical breast inspection or palpation
  • Assist licensed independent practitioners with breast interventional radiographic procedures
  • Apply principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiographic procedures
  • Receive, relay, and document verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in the patient's medical record
  • Corroborate patient's clinical history with the ordered procedure
  • Verify informed consent
  • Assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures
  • Prepare patients for procedures
  • Apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others
  • Perform venipuncture per procedural protocol based on imaging order from a licensed independent practitioner
  • Start and maintain intravenous access per procedural protocol based on an imaging order for a licensed independent practitioner
  • Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner
  • Evaluate images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded
  • Identify and escalate emergency situations and manage until appropriate licensed independent practitioner, EMS, MERT, RRT, or Code Team arrives to assume control
  • Provide patient education related to imaging procedure
  • Educate, mentor, and provide general oversight of students and other learners in the Radiology environment
  • Perform ongoing quality assurance activities
Requirements
  • Registry by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT-R)
  • ARRT-M certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification
  • One (1) year of previous work experience as a Breast Imaging Technologist
  • Preferred: One to three (1-3) years of previous work experience as a Breast Imaging Technologist, previous work experience in an academic medical center environment
Working Conditions

The Mammography Technologist will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent and intense customer interactions. The individual must be able to handle multiple priorities, work in a noisy environment, and adapt to frequent change.

The Mammography Technologist will be required to lift 20-50 pounds and perform prolonged standing, sitting, and walking. The individual must also be able to use a computer for prolonged periods and have strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and logical thinking skills.
