Job Summary

This is a highly responsible, professional, and administrative position that works under the direction of the Library Director in planning, directing, and coordinating the Village's neighborhood library programs, activities, and services to meet the multi-cultural needs of the community in accordance with library policies and library science principles geared toward youth and teen services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Development and Management: Establishes policies, strategies, and plans for Youth and Teen Services, manages programs and material selections within the budget, and plans, promotes, and implements special programs for children.
  • Collection Development: Selects books and other materials for preschoolers through high school, promotes literacy, and provides materials that reflect the diverse interests of the community.
  • Community Engagement: Develops and promotes programming to serve the diverse interests and needs of the community, conducts story hours, prepares reading lists, and provides reader's advisory and reference services to patrons.
  • Volunteer Management: Coordinates the Summer Youth Volunteer Program.
  • Administrative Support: Assists the Library Director with planning and coordinating routine and special projects, as well as the supervision of the efficient operation of the library.
  • Curriculum Connections: Develops curriculum connections across the range of grades.
  • Community Partnerships: Develops a close and positive relationship working relationship with local schools and the PTA through visits, book talks, and programs for classes who visit the library.
  • Communication and Reporting: Writes reports, letters, newsletters, grants, and press releases, designs forms, produces fliers and newsletters using desktop publishing.
  • Customer Service: Provides excellent customer service to the public and staff.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in library science, political science, education, business administration, or a related field (or the ability to attain a degree within an agreed-upon timeframe).
  • Experience: At least two years of paid professional supervisory and administrative full-time work experience in a public library or municipal government or related business administration experience.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of library science and administration, thorough knowledge of general reference, classification, ordering, circulation, and children's library work, ability to plan, organize, and direct library-developed programs, ability to interpret community interest and needs, and to plan and provide continuing library services.
