This pivotal role within our Information Security & Technology (IST) Department involves collaborating with the IST Director to strategize, develop, and implement IT initiatives; acquiring, deploying, and managing network engineering, business applications, database administration, surveillance, and mobile systems to boost efficiency and security; addressing escalated service challenges; and mentoring IST personnel towards effective solutions.

Candidate Profile Ideal candidates for the Systems Engineer position will exhibit a strong customer focus and the ability to manage systems and deliver projects in a dynamic environment that requires significant interaction with internal clients, vendors, third-party contractors, and various stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field, coupled with at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in systems engineering. Candidates should hold Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) and CompTIA Network+ and Security+ certifications, with proven success in tasks directly related to the Systems Engineer role, including:

  • Deployment and management of desktop, mobile, and server operating systems, including Windows 10/11, Android, iOS, Mac OS, and Windows Server 2008 or later.
  • Application support for Microsoft 365, Office 365, SQL, and Azure Cloud services.
  • Familiarity with network system software, protocols, and standards, including SonicWALL, Cisco Catalyst, and Meraki switches, routers, wireless access points, and network monitoring systems.
  • Backup and restoration systems for both on-premise and cloud endpoints.
  • Enterprise Endpoint Protection systems such as Windows Defender.
  • Management of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates.
  • Administration of hybrid configurations of Active Directory Domain, Active Directory Federation, Exchange, and Web Application Proxy services.
  • Deployment and management of SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS products.
  • Management of Azure Cloud Services, including Azure Active Directory, Compliance and Security, Endpoint Manager, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Virtual Machines, Windows Defender, and Microsoft Sentinel.
  • Mobile device management systems.
  • Deployment and management of virtual servers using Microsoft’s Hyper-V technology and Azure’s Virtual Machine service.
  • Storage Area Network (SAN) management.
  • Documentation and maintenance of system configurations and processes.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience with railroad industry IT and OT systems such as fare collection, security cameras, public messaging, and access control.
  • Knowledge of current cybersecurity systems software, protocols, and standards.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Certified Systems Engineer Professional (CSEP) certifications.
  • Experience in disaster recovery.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage complex and overlapping projects.

Additional Requirements:

Candidates must possess a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, and maintain a safe driving record throughout their employment with VRE.

Flexibility to work outside of standard business hours in a dynamic commuter rail operating environment is essential.
