Job Description

The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. As a key member of the School of Medicine's leadership team, the Chair will be responsible for advancing the department's academic, research, and clinical programs, while fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and vision for the Department of Family Medicine, aligning with the School of Medicine's tripartite mission.
  • Develop and implement departmental goals, objectives, and policies, ensuring alignment with the School of Medicine's strategic plan.
  • Lead and manage the department's faculty, staff, and trainees, promoting a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Oversee the department's research portfolio, fostering collaborations and securing funding to advance the field of family medicine.
  • Develop and manage the department's budget, ensuring effective resource allocation and financial stewardship.
  • Represent the Department of Family Medicine in various internal and external forums, promoting the department's mission and values.
Requirements
  • Doctoral or advanced degree from an accredited institution.
  • 10+ years of professional, scholarly, and educational accomplishments as a faculty member.
  • Board Certification in Family Medicine and eligibility for a California medical license.
  • 5+ years of experience in academic healthcare, including integration of education and research initiatives.
  • 5+ years of analyzing, planning, and implementing strategic initiatives and experiences for an academic unit.
  • 3+ years of experience aligning financial, personnel, and space resources to meet operational needs and strategic plans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading a large academic research department with multiple subspecialty divisions.
  • Outstanding record with experience as a senior administrator in an academic environment.
  • Organizational management experience leading financial, human resources, and space discussions, strategy, and plans.
  • Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Successful philanthropic and/or grant generation.
  • Proven ability to define areas of concern, strategically identify solutions, and implement updates within targeted timeframes.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to create a compelling narrative to advance the department.
  • Experience working with and supporting a diverse group of faculty, trainees, staff, students, trainees, and stakeholders.
  • Experience engaging with external stakeholders and partners to establish and meet strategic goals.
