Relationship Advisor

The Firm-To-Firm practice at Northern Trust delivers financial advice and expertise to top executives through company-sponsored Financial Wellness programs, driving growth for our Wealth Management business unit.

Job Description Summary:

The Relationship Advisor, Wealth Management role is responsible for managing individual and family wealth management client relationships, delivering high-quality service and ensuring client satisfaction.

Collaborating with the service team and Northern Trust resources, this role ensures timely delivery of account service, proactive advice, issue resolution, effective communication of client needs, and development of the overall advisory relationship with the client.

Key Responsibilities:

Manages assigned account base of wealth management clients, working with clients and their professional advisors to develop a thorough understanding of their needs and goals.

Exhibits knowledge of agency account agreements and governing documents, as well as Advisory Practice services/offerings, capital markets, banking products/offerings, asset management, and prudent investment principles.

Guides client conversations for goals-driven wealth management and holistic advice, providing proactive advice on Northern Trust's products/services, emerging issues, regulatory/tax changes, and appropriate actions for the client.

Combines technical knowledge with fact-finding and analysis to develop advice-driven solutions for clients, explaining complicated concepts in a thoughtful way using non-technical terminology.

Maintains a working knowledge of various Northern Trust resources and utilizes knowledge, experience, and Northern Trust resources to identify opportunities for relationship enhancement.

Focused client service with responsiveness, diplomacy, and tact, with proactive client contact through written and verbal communication with suitable frequency.

Exhibits excellent time management skills and knowledge of Advisory Practice services/offerings, capital markets, banking products/offerings, asset management, financial planning, and prudent investment principles.

Understanding of Northern Trust fiduciary standards and practices, applying fiduciary knowledge and judgment to fiduciary relationships, and recognizing fiduciary risk issues and seeking appropriate resolution.

Cultivates relationships with referral sources and centers of influence to build the business, identifies and develops new business opportunities, and participates in community and professional organizations representing Northern Trust.

Teaches and mentors less experienced partners, travels to meet with clients where appropriate, and seeks continued development of fiduciary and advisory skills through training and experience.

Exercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information.

Requirements:

Strong relationship-building skills, ability to identify opportunities to grow and develop client relationships, knowledge of financial products and services, technical knowledge of investments, tax, legal, and operations, and some knowledge of fiduciary standards, principles, and applicable laws and regulations.

Skills in negotiating, problem-solving, delegating, leadership, and sales are necessary to service the client relationship, and requires in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and basic knowledge of related job disciplines.

Ability to explain difficult or sensitive information and work to build consensus.

Preferred Qualifications:

A College or University degree and/or relevant proven work experience is preferred.

Minimum 7 years' experience in relationship management, personal trust, investment management, or related fields is required.
