Job Title: Clinical Engineering Technician III

Join the University of Maryland Medical System as a Clinical Engineering Technician III and contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care by ensuring the reliability and effectiveness of medical equipment.

Job Summary

This role involves performing complex repairs and maintenance of electronic patient care and clinical engineering equipment, including installations, project management, calibration, and routine maintenance of medical electronic equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and calibration services on complex electronic patient care, clinical laboratory, computerized pneumatic conveying equipment, and basic radiographic equipment in accordance with departmental standards and manufacturers' operating and repair manuals.
  2. Interpret and perform inspection procedures appropriately and document procedures in accordance with Joint Commission regulations and departmental policy and procedure. Identify potential safety hazards of equipment and document actions taken to eliminate them.
  3. Respond to work requests, troubleshoot malfunctions, and make necessary repairs in a safe, timely, and efficient manner. Install, repair, and maintain complex diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including their electronic and mechanical components.
  4. Schedule third-party repair of equipment when needs are beyond the department's expertise.
  5. Maintain test equipment and tools in good working order. Communicate with nursing, allied health, and medical staff regularly regarding equipment operation to prevent/minimize equipment failure.
  6. Participate in the evaluation of new, rental, or demonstration biomedical equipment and make recommendations regarding acquisition.
  7. Observe general clinical engineering practices and respective departmental policies and procedures to promote the overall efficiency of repair service and operations for the Biomedical Engineering Department.
  8. Assist management with oversight on maintenance of departmental records, such as maintenance requests, electrical safety forms, files, relevant statistics, and technical manuals on biomedical equipment in accordance with Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulations.
  9. Assist with education on the use and operation of clinical equipment. Respond to emergency codes as trained and assigned. Strive to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Commitments. Responsible for honest behavior in all matters. To the best of the employee's knowledge and understanding, comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
  10. Maintain the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Use and disclose only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  1. An Associate's Degree or Certificate in Biomedical Equipment Technology (or related field) or Military Biomedical Technology Course (or equivalent technical program) required.
  2. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  3. 5 years of minimum experience required in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of medical equipment in a hospital setting with 3 years' experience in maintenance of ventilators, anesthesia machines, and monitoring systems.

You will also need:

  1. Highly effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively with all levels of hospital staff, patients, visitors, and levels of staff.
  2. Knowledge of applicable trade areas.
  3. Listening and organizational skills.
  4. Computer skills, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office programs.
  5. Results-oriented, mature, self-developing, and have integrity.
  6. The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions and have the ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
