Veterans Services Officer

Job Summary: The Veterans Services Officer will assist veterans in obtaining the benefits to which they are entitled and records related to their service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct veteran-directed outreach to increase awareness of and utilization of programs and services of the Veterans Administration, community agencies, and the Division of Community Services.
- Foster relationships between Shelby County Government and entities that provide services to veterans.
- Assist veterans and their families in filing for benefits and records from the Veterans Administration.
- Educate and counsel veterans and their families about benefits and programs available to them from the Veterans Administration, the Division of Community Services, and the community.
- Develop and implement outreach and engagement strategies which facilitate access to the programs of the Veterans Administration and the Division of Community Services.
- Establish and maintain strategic relationships with internal and external community partners.
- Represent Shelby County Government at veterans' meetings, events, and activities.
- Plan and execute programs to enhance the lives of Shelby County veteran residents and their families.
Requirements:
- Three (3) years work experience in veterans services, community outreach, or related programs.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social sciences, psychology, public administration, or related field.
- Must be honorably discharged from a military service branch.
- Must attain within ninety (90) days after hire and maintain the required certifications, including state certifications, Vetra-Spec, and PIV (Personal Identity Verification).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of veterans' resources.
- Knowledge of military services and veterans' issues.
- Skilled at planning, organizing, and facilitating activities and events.
- Skilled in navigating the social services sector.
- Ability to develop effective programs and policies.
- Strong communication skills in both written and verbal presentations.
- Knowledge of governmental structure and advocacy processes.
