Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of an assigned supervisor, the Corrections Deputy is responsible for ensuring the security and maintenance of Shelby County Jail operations in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Supervise the movement of inmates and maintain control in all assigned areas, adjusting to assignments dictated by changing workload.
  2. Perform security checks and routine shakedown searches on each shift to ensure security, inspecting each inmate to verify armband, identity, location, and physical condition.
  3. Enter and access information in the computer, printing rosters and reports that require a clear, written description of an event.
  4. Assist in the admittance and release of prisoners, informing inmates of pod rules and their personal responsibilities.
  5. Maintain an awareness of inmates at all times, checking physical and mental conditions, and taking notice of any abnormal circumstances.
  6. Determine appropriate methods and tactics for correcting inmate behavior by applying progressive discipline consistently.
  7. Follow established procedures under extraordinary circumstances, remaining calm to maintain security of the facility and safety of all personnel.
  8. Resist inmate attempts to manipulate, distract, or interfere with operations of the pod, resolving minor problems/conflicts before they escalate.
  9. Confiscate items, remove inmates from the pod, or use OC Pepper Spray if necessary, responding accordingly to emergencies.
  10. Exchange relevant information with relief coworkers and communicate information to superiors.
  11. Attend and successfully complete annual in-service training, performing other related duties as required or directed.

Requirements

  1. High school diploma or possess a GED; OR be 18 years of age at time of application.
  2. Be of high moral character.
  3. Be discharged under honorable conditions from Armed Forces, if applicable.
  4. Pass a physical agility test upon satisfying initial minimum qualifications.
  5. Pass a psychological and medical evaluation, and be subject to testing for substance abuse after receiving a contingent offer of employment.
  6. Hold a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one by date of employment.
  7. Obtain CPR Certification and perform as needed.
  8. Pass a physical examination.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Schedule:

Entry: $3,816.50 Monthly

Over 3 years: $4,192.62 Monthly

Over 5 Years: $4,875.50 Monthly

Hiring & Retention Bonus $5,000

1st payment of $1,500 to be paid after completion of six (6) months of service.

2nd payment of $1,500 to be paid after completion of one (1) year of service.

3rd payment of $1,000 to be paid after completion of eighteen (18) months of service.

4th and final payment of $1,000 to be paid after completion of twenty-four (18) months of service.
