Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of full-time direct care experience in the supervision and programming of youth under 21 years of age;
- OR two years of full-time experience in the care, programming, and/or secure custody of residential clients in a healthcare, mental health, or correctional institutional environment;
- OR a Bachelor's degree;
- OR an Associate's degree with six months of relevant experience;
- OR a high school diploma or equivalent with one year of experience;
- OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience requirements.

Note: Direct care experience with youth involved in the juvenile justice system or in institutional settings such as camps, schools, community centers, youth rehabilitation programs, or residential facilities is essential.
Appropriate verifiable part-time experience will be accepted on a prorated basis.

Successful completion of the probationary period requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and the ability to operate a vehicle legally.


Duties Description
The Youth Support Specialist (YSS) is responsible for supervising court-placed youth aged 12-20 residing in secure, limited-secure, and/or non-secure residential facilities.

YSSs are integral members of a team dedicated to ensuring the facility is both physically secure and emotionally safe for youth and staff alike. They play a crucial role in fostering a professional, healthy, and therapeutic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build professional relationships based on trust, safety, and confidence with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Actively engage as a member of a youth's support team, collaborating with professionals to address emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Demonstrate confidence in interacting with individuals experiencing physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Implement graduated harm reduction strategies while supervising youth, including intervention when necessary to ensure safety.
  • Contribute to the well-being of the facility community through collaboration and informed practices.
  • Supervise and assist youth during recreational and educational activities, along with various assignments as needed.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with the families and loved ones of youth.
  • Support youth in achieving educational, work readiness, and community transition goals.

Training Requirements:
- Attend a 4-week Juvenile Justice Basic Training orientation.
- Become proficient in OCFS-approved physical skills and youth restraint techniques (training provided twice a year).
- Complete mandated annual trainings and refreshers.

Additional Information:
  • Some intrastate travel may be required for youth medical appointments, extracurricular activities, or other events.
  • The YSS position is physically demanding, requiring readiness to ensure the health and safety of youth and staff, including the use of approved physical restraint techniques.

Note:
The YSS position is available at multiple facilities, with vacancies throughout the state. Shift work, weekends, holidays, and overtime assignments, including mandatory and voluntary overtime, are required.
