Overview

This position pertains to the Chief Physician role within the Primary Care Services, overseeing the Section's operations. This overview is not exhaustive of all assigned duties but outlines key performance expectations and responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • The Section Chief is a leadership role responsible for all facets of primary care delivery within the designated section and supervising staff. In collaboration with the Associate Chief and Chief of Primary Care, the Section Chief is accountable for:
  • Strategizing, organizing, developing, implementing, controlling, and refining comprehensive patient management and clinical support within the clinic.
  • Providing services, technical advice, and leadership guidance necessary for section staff to meet the care and treatment needs of patients.
  • Being a forward-thinking physician who embraces primary care delivered via the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model.
  • Maintaining records of meetings that include conclusions, data recommendations, responsible individuals, actions taken, and evaluations of effectiveness as appropriate.
  • Formulating policies and procedures to ensure effective management, ethics, safety, communication, and quality within the section and between Primary Care and other services as necessary.
  • Reviewing privilege templates for each service at least annually and making recommendations for modifications as needed.
  • Delivering a full range of services, including assessments and utilizing the most suitable techniques to provide quality care in their subspecialty.
  • Conducting appropriate evaluations, diagnoses, and treatments of patients.
  • Offering a full range of therapeutic interventions in units/programs at the medical center to which they are assigned and have clinical privileges to practice, including diagnostic assessments and medication management.
  • Participating effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, collaborating with multidisciplinary team members to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care.
Compensation: Competitive salary, annual performance bonuses, regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off annually (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and a possible 5-day paid absence for CME).

Retirement Benefits: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by the agency.

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.

Continuing Medical Education (CME): Possible $1,000 reimbursement per year (must be full-time with board certification).

Malpractice Coverage: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (the candidate must be willing to work weekends and irregular hours and may need to provide clinical services off tour as required).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth.
  • Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
  • Two years of VA Primary Care experience within a PACT panel/setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required. This position requires: light to moderate lifting, light carrying, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, and other physical capabilities.

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
