Position Summary

The individual in this role will undertake various flagging responsibilities on construction and paving projects, ensuring the safe direction of traffic within work zones to safeguard both personnel and property.

Core Responsibilities
  • Oversee traffic management in all designated work areas, promptly reporting any issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Understand and communicate general workflow patterns in work zones, ensuring adherence to established protocols and traffic regulations.
  • Assist in the setup, relocation, and removal of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control equipment.
  • Guide traffic movement through the site using hand signals, signs, and flags.
  • Alert construction personnel when vehicles fail to comply with signals to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Advise drivers on detour routes around construction areas.
  • Document license plate numbers of traffic violators for law enforcement.
  • Follow directives from the foreman regarding daily tasks and expectations for each specific project.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with all safety policies and procedures, utilizing appropriate equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Adhere to all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations regarding safe work practices.
  • Exhibit kindness and courtesy towards the traveling public, pedestrians, and fellow workers.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance at assigned times.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to perform additional duties as required.
  • Engage in general labor tasks as necessary, including digging, spreading, and leveling construction materials.

To excel in this position, an individual must successfully fulfill each essential duty.

Education and Experience

  • A High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Prior experience in the construction industry is advantageous.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old due to the nature of the work environment.
  • Must successfully pass a drug screening, physical examination, and criminal background check.
  • Exhibit a professional and courteous demeanor towards co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Strictly adhere to safety protocols and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Report to the assigned job site in uniform and prepared to commence work at the designated start time.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as mandated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
  • Willingness to collaborate in a team environment and assist colleagues and supervisors with additional tasks as needed.
  • Open to traveling and working away from home when necessary.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Dependability and consistency in meeting attendance schedules.
  • Ability to work autonomously and complete daily activities according to the work schedule.
  • Knowledge and/or prior experience in construction zones.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.

  • Required to stand for extended periods, repeatedly holding signs and flags, and raising arms to direct traffic.
  • Able to stand, walk, manipulate objects with hands and fingers, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Capability to perform strenuous tasks in varying weather conditions.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas may be loud, but is typically moderate.
