General Overview:
Under the supervision of the Section Supervisor, the Medical Technologist independently conducts, evaluates, and reports on diagnostic laboratory tests in accordance with departmental protocols. The role includes serving as the lead technician during weekends and in the absence of the section supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts, evaluates, and reports laboratory tests with precision within the designated time frames, demonstrating the ability to manage multiple tests simultaneously.
- Performs and documents necessary equipment maintenance, calibration, and linearity checks. Identifies and documents equipment issues, notifying the section chief or supervisor as necessary.
- Provides comprehensive Diagnostic Laboratory Procedures adhering to established standards, showcasing competency across all procedures relevant to the age groups served, including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Assesses specimens for quality and quantity to ensure reliable test outcomes, confirming the correct specimen is analyzed for the appropriate patient and procedure.
- Implements and documents quality control procedures, ensuring quality control measures are met before reporting patient results, and follows departmental protocols for addressing unacceptable results.
- Engages in proficiency testing as determined by the section supervisor or Quality Control Coordinator, in alignment with the Quality Assurance Plan.
- Organizes testing workflows to enhance efficiency while prioritizing tasks effectively. Actively seeks additional departmental responsibilities during slower periods.
- Maintains awareness of inventory needs and ordering processes as defined by each section, ensuring a clean and well-stocked workstation in compliance with infection control standards.
- Communicates effectively with laboratory staff, nursing units, physicians, and patients regarding specimen requirements, handling, and patient information, documenting critical results as per departmental policy.
- Provides instruction to medical technology students and new hires under the guidance of the section chief or supervisor, taking charge in their absence.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures outlined in the hospital and departmental manuals.
- Familiarizes with fire, disaster, and safety protocols relevant to the work environment, including the safe disposal of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
Education:
Associate degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
Active State of Florida Medical Technologist license required.
