General Overview:

Under the direct oversight of the Department Head of Cardiovascular Services or designated representative, the Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Specialist (CEPS) is responsible for conducting diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology (EP) procedures for pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients. This role operates independently as a proficient technologist in EP, serving as a highly skilled and clinically adept member of the Cardiovascular Services patient care team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts and supports electrophysiologists during intricate electrophysiology studies.
  • Utilizes advanced electrophysiology specialty equipment, including but not limited to 3D mapping systems, stimulation systems, intracardiac echocardiography, and EP monitoring and recording systems.
  • Performs at an expert clinical level, assisting physicians in both diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures for pediatric and adult patients.
  • Acts as a role model and expert resource for both internal and external stakeholders regarding standards of care for diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures.
  • Implements safe, competent, and efficient procedural care to EP patients, adhering to policies, procedures, and standards of care across diverse populations and complexities.
  • Demonstrates expertise in all cardiovascular laboratory technical skills, including image acquisition, transferring and archiving images, troubleshooting, and in-depth knowledge of catheters and specialty equipment used during EP procedures.
  • Oversees and actively engages in annual EP skills assessments, ECG competency evaluations, and unit competencies for staff.
  • Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of radiological equipment and safety protocols, shielding techniques, imaging skills, and troubleshooting skills for X-Ray equipment, 3D mapping, and recording equipment utilized in the Electrophysiology Lab.
  • Responsibilities include hemodynamic monitoring and recording of patients during EP procedures, intra- and post-procedure patient assessments, and patient care within the EP scope of practice, including patient education and roles in invasive procedures.
  • Continuously collects, assesses, and documents data in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide procedural care for EP patients and their families. Documentation of chronological events during procedures and medical care requires basic computer skills for electronic medical record completion.
  • Ensures informed patient consent is obtained and that all questions and concerns are addressed satisfactorily. Adheres to Universal Protocol standards for all invasive procedures.
  • Assists in implementing safe, competent, and efficient care for EP patients, following departmental policies, procedures, and standards across various populations and complexities.
  • Proactively identifies potential issues, adjusts priorities, and plans independently, with or without medical direction, in response to data indicating potential urgent or emergent life-threatening risks, initiating actions to mitigate or correct risks per ACLS guidelines.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Familiar with fire, disaster, and safety procedures and regulations relevant to the work environment.
Requirements:

Formal Education:
  • Graduate of a Registered Nurse, Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, or Radiologic Technologist training program.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
  • Required: Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), or American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT);
  • BLS certification required through AHA;
  • ACLS certification (within six months of hire).
  • Preferred: RCES, RCIT, or HRS CEPS Certification Competency in Cardiac Electrophysiology for Associated Professionals.
