Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Electrical Test Specialist II is proficient in establishing test configurations, conducting both static and dynamic evaluations of AC Induction motor products. This role requires the ability to operate standard testing apparatus and to independently execute routine assessments utilizing commercial testing supplies and dielectric testing methods.

The specialist is responsible for performing final acceptance tests as well as certain in-process evaluations of motors, VFD components, assemblies, and systems within a manufacturing setting. This position involves assisting engineers in diagnosing test failures and identifying root causes along with corrective measures. A foundational understanding of electric motors, VFDs, transformers, electrical testing devices, and safety protocols is essential. Experience with voltages exceeding 1,000V and/or large industrial electric motors is advantageous.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts tests on a diverse range of systems, including medium voltage drives and rotational machinery (generators and/or motors), utilizing various electronic, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic measuring systems. Familiarity with advanced hand tools such as torque wrenches and dial indicators is necessary.
  • Prepares and executes a broad spectrum of electrical, thermal, and mechanical tests under the guidance of engineering staff, senior technicians, and the Test Manager.
  • Assists in the installation of units or systems for testing, which includes connecting valves, pumps, hydraulic, mechanical, or electrical controls, cabling, and power sources.
  • Responsible for the setup and disassembly of test equipment, including cabling, clamping, instrumentation, and piping.
  • Wires assemblies and subassemblies according to schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Interfaces various electrical components with measurement and data acquisition systems.
  • Activates controls to apply electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or mechanical power, subjecting test items to sequential steps in the testing cycle.
  • Conducts electrical and mechanical tests on components or assemblies, documenting data and generating reports as needed.
  • Implements pass/fail criteria for tests and communicates results to relevant personnel.
  • Collaborates with engineering teams to address specification-related issues and reviews testing plans, including test types, conditions, and durations.
  • Maintains production testing equipment on a limited basis, performing troubleshooting, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance.
  • Adapts quickly to new challenges, applying learned knowledge and skills to modify test setups and tooling as necessary.
  • Continuously seeks to enhance the safety and integrity of production and testing environments.
  • Maintains regular communication with customers regarding test progress and outcomes.
  • Adheres to safety protocols while ensuring a clean and organized workspace.
  • Demonstrates quality workmanship and takes pride in meeting customer and company standards.
  • Maintains punctuality and compliance with company policies, including drug-free workplace regulations.
  • Follows all company policies, including adherence to ISO 9001 Standards and safety procedures.
  • Incorporates TECO-Westinghouse's Standards of Excellence into daily tasks to foster a culture of quality.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

CONTACTS AND COLLABORATION

Regular interaction with customers is expected during witness tests, alongside daily communication with various departments including Design, Factory Operations, Planning, Sales & Marketing, and Service. Effective teamwork and communication with colleagues at all levels are essential.

QUALIFICATIONS

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in essential duties. The following qualifications are required:

  • Strong reading and mathematical skills.
  • General aptitude for electrical and mechanical operations.
  • Customer service-oriented mindset.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a solid mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience with testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, meters, and analyzers.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to provide feedback for process improvements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

An Associate degree in Electrical Technology or a related field is required, along with two or more years of relevant experience or training.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in testing large industrial electric motors.
  • Electrician's license (Master or Journeyman).
  • ISO Category I or higher vibration analyst certification.

LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret technical documents and effectively communicate with team members. Proficiency in basic mathematical operations and applying mathematical concepts to practical situations is required.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions and solve problems, as well as interpret technical instructions and manage various variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role requires regular physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Vision capabilities include close, distance, color, and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees may be exposed to fumes, moving parts, electrical hazards, and loud noise levels. Safety precautions are essential.
