Senior Combustion Systems Engineer
At SpaceX, we are driven by the vision of a future where humanity ventures beyond Earth, exploring the cosmos. Our mission is to develop groundbreaking technologies that will make this vision a reality, ultimately aiming to establish human life on Mars.
SENIOR COMBUSTION SYSTEMS ENGINEER (RAPTOR IGNITION SYSTEMS)
The role of the Combustion Systems Engineer encompasses the responsibility for the design, production, and operational management of the engine ignition mechanisms, transient sequences, and related combustion hardware essential for the successful initiation and termination of the engine across all flight phases. You will lead the efforts necessary to efficiently and safely develop, operate, and execute (and re-execute) your systems and sequences on the most advanced full-flow staged combustion engine propelling the largest launch vehicle ever constructed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the design, analysis, development, sequencing, and operational tasks for Raptor ignition and transients.
- Ensure the success of hardware design and specifications, manage production to meet throughput targets, and guarantee reliable engine performance from startup through mainstage to shutdown.
- Collaborate with colleagues through informal leadership and self-directed organization to achieve objectives. Clearly assign responsibilities and hold team members accountable for their contributions.
- Work alongside engineers and technicians from various disciplines, including production, developmental testing, launch operations, vehicle systems, guidance, navigation & control (GNC), software, and reliability to create hardware and transient sequences that fulfill high-level engine and vehicle goals.
- Identify, organize, and drive modifications to hardware design and sequences in alignment with departmental priorities such as simplification, reliability, performance, and optimization for vehicle architecture success.
- Establish specifications for hardware and engine transients, collaborating with other engineers to ensure that interfacing systems meet these specifications.
- Develop testing requirements and engage in test operations to refine hardware and processes for flight readiness.
- Create test plans for developmental objectives, analyze data, and provide troubleshooting recommendations for hardware or sequences. Communicate test results to relevant systems.
- Conduct data analysis of test and flight operations, assess trends from engine test history, establish operational limits, and make critical go/no-go decisions.
- Facilitate a high launch cadence through automated analysis of test and flight data using programming.
- Gain insights into fluid and combustion transients related to engine operation through testing and modeling.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the integrated engine system and how modifications to hardware and sequences impact the vehicle and mission.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience with engineering programming and data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, Winplot, or similar).
- 5+ years of experience with rocket or jet engine hardware or high-pressure fluid systems in design, manufacturing, analysis, or testing roles.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or aeronautical/astronautical engineering.
- 5+ years of professional or academic experience with jet or rocket engines or other high-pressure fluid systems.
- Proficiency in the fundamental principles of compressible and incompressible flow, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, mechanics, fluid dynamics, and combustion transients.
- Experience in analyzing engine transient behavior or designing engine startup and shutdown sequences.
- Experience in analyzing test data and making technical decisions based on findings.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills across multiple teams.
- Analytical/scientific programming experience (Python, MATLAB, C/C++, Excel, etc.).
- Experience with systems-level engine modeling (lumped parameter fluids modeling, ROCETS, etc.).
- Experience in designing for manufacturing and implementing designs into production processes, including troubleshooting and iterating designs based on feedback.
- Ability to exercise sound engineering judgment and deliver high-quality work in a technical environment under tight timelines.
- Ability to provide and clearly communicate technically-sound information in high-pressure situations.
- Proven ability to organize and motivate a team of peers to achieve program objectives.
- Self-motivated in solving complex challenges.
- Positive attitude in the face of significant challenges.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to travel in support of testing and launch operations.
- Availability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
