Role Summary:

Under close supervision, the Laboratory Research Assistant I engages in a variety of standard experimental protocols and procedures to support the goals of one or more laboratory research initiatives in a designated research area. Responsibilities include assisting with general laboratory operations, maintaining reagents, and managing supply inventories. The role involves filing and tracking documentation, ensuring accurate and detailed records of experiments and findings. The assistant will also aid in the operation of specialized laboratory equipment and adhere to safety protocols. The Laboratory Research Assistant I will be proficient in performing routine cellular, micro- and molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to Western and Northern blotting, DNA/RNA analysis, PCR, protein extraction, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, and staining. This position does not entail supervisory duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts a variety of routine laboratory tasks and procedures.
  • May assist with the care and management of laboratory animals.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and associated records.
  • Processes, transports, and logs biological samples.
  • Updates and maintains a computer database with pertinent clinical information.
  • Performs laboratory maintenance tasks, including cleaning and sterilizing glassware.
  • Manages inventory of general laboratory materials and places orders for equipment and supplies.
  • Provides assistance to new students and fellows in the laboratory.
  • Adheres to and observes established safety standards and protocols.

Qualifications

Educational Background:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological sciences is required.
