Job Summary

As a Certified Anesthesia Technologist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in assisting the anesthesia provider under the supervision of the Chief of Anesthesiology. Your primary responsibility will be to practice in accordance with the legal scope of practice and within established standards of care, policies, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the anesthesia provider, you will be involved in the anesthesia plan of care, considering age-related needs and performing patient care activities within the scope of practice.
  • You will work with minimal supervision, daily responsibilities including, but not limited to, the setup, application, and assistance of non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring, induction of anesthesia for general/regional & local anesthesia, fiberoptic intubation, provide cricoid pressure, insertion of routine & difficult venipuncture, positioning of patient for surgery, anesthesia blocks, and emergency C-sections in labor & deliver.
  • You will respond to Code Blue, Code Pink, etc. with the anesthesia care team.
  • You will prepare and apply patient warming modalities when needed.
  • You will actively participate in problem identification and resolution, development of policies & procedures, quality improvement, and staff development.
  • You will manage work assignments to ensure completion of patient care activities.
  • You will assemble anesthesia airway set up, prepare machine for malignant hyperthermia & latex allergy when needed.
  • You will utilize sterile technique, set up and assist with placement of invasive monitoring equipment in routine and emergency situations, including arterial line, central venous pressure line, PA catheter, cardiac output, and other monitoring adjuncts.
  • You will assist with obtaining lab specimens and ABGs, be competent in the use of & quality assurance for Point of Care testing equipment.
  • You will coordinate patient monitoring equipment availability with PACU and Critical Care units.
  • You will work with the perioperative team to facilitate a prompt room turnover.
  • You will assemble anesthesia equipment and supplies needed for general/regional/local anesthesia.
  • You will assist the anesthesia provider with patient preparation, electrode placement, use of ultrasound/nerve stimulator devices, and perform mechanical tasks as directed by the anesthesia provider.
  • You will ensure sterile technique, prepare anesthesia trays, and assist with procedures.
  • You will remove and appropriately dispose of supplies and equipment following procedures done by the anesthesia provider.
  • You will operate cell salvaging, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and TEE devices as required.
  • You will perform cleaning, sterilization, and decontamination of all non-disposable anesthesia-related items.
  • You will consider budget while maintaining sufficient stock and review for outdates, supplies, and non-scheduled drugs in the anesthesia workroom, machines, carts, and auxiliary anesthetizing locations.
  • You will have an understanding of medications commonly used in anesthesia, including purpose, proper storage, generic and proprietary names, and labeling requirements.
  • You will coordinate with Pharmacy for out-of-stock drugs.
  • You will utilize working knowledge and operation of all equipment and monitors.
  • You will perform routine checkout and upkeep of anesthesia equipment, inspect for damages, and send for repair or troubleshoot as needed.
  • You will coordinate with Biomedical Engineering for maintenance and repair of anesthesia equipment and ensure adequate backup of equipment at all times.
  • You will coordinate trial, data collection, and recommendations for purchase of new equipment.
  • You will work with engineering, maintain record/documentation of equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • You will maintain inventory of disposable and non-disposable equipment, including all supplies, and initiate replacement using established contract vendors.
  • You will maintain & outdate supplies in emergency carts and boxes, such as code blue, malignant hyperthermia, fluid resuscitation/code purple, and fiberoptic/difficult airway.
  • You will assure a clean, orderly, and functional work environment.
  • You will participate in relevant local, regional, and national committees.
  • You will maintain working relationships with approved vendors.
  • You will organize work to minimize the use of overtime.
  • You will identify and assist in systems improvements for simplification or correction.
  • You will utilize payroll and non-payroll resources to their maximum potential, assist manager in capital budget preparation.
  • You will consistently demonstrate a professional, supportive attitude.
  • You will initiate and support new ideas and actively assist others.
  • You will confront difficult or conflict situations constructively and seek appropriate assistance.
  • You will actively participate in departmental professional development and mentor anesthesia students.
  • You will participate with the assessment of current and future learning needs and development of an annual educational plan.

  • You will practice customer service standards as defined by the service area, medical center, and specific department.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned.
  • You will consistently support compliance, the Principles of Responsibility, and Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct.
  • You will maintain and protect patient confidentiality.
  • You will adhere to applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, accreditation, and licenser requirements, and Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures.
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience: N/A
  • Education: Graduate of an Accredited program in Anesthesia Technology with an AS degree OR certified by the American Society of Technologists and Technicians (ASATT), as a Technologist
  • License, Certification, Registration: I.V. Certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Anesthesia Technician Certificate from American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians, Basic Life Support
Additional Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties and responsibilities required of a Certified Anesthesia Technologist.
  • Must be able to lift 45 lbs of equipment from an overhead position on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to push/pull up to 500 lbs.
  • Keyboarding skills Upon training, must be able to use appropriate computer software applications, including the Health Connect system.
  • Must be able to stand or walk continuously.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of anesthesia equipment, including proper quality assurance, storage, and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of Anesthesia department procedures, principles of asepsis, and sterile technique.
  • Able to demonstrate manual dexterity and mechanical ability.
  • Must be able to exercise judgment and work efficiently and competently with minimal supervision.
  • Utilizes effective communication strategies, which result in intended outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certificate of training for Drager, GE, or other anesthesia delivery systems, if not a graduate of a program.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a Cardiac OR and/or Level 1 trauma center.
