Job Summary:

The Medical Assistant I, Certified provides clinical and administrative support to providers and other healthcare team members in an outpatient clinic setting at UNC Health Care.

Under the clinical supervision of the provider, the Medical Assistant I, Certified performs routine clinical and administrative tasks, including rooming and intake processes, collecting patient data, and assisting with treatments and examinations.

The ideal candidate will have a strong ability to communicate effectively with patients and families, work collaboratively as part of a team, and use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs rooming and intake processes, collecting patient data, including vital signs, height, weight, and data related to the patient's reason for visit.
  • Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
  • Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
  • Assists the provider as directed, during treatments, examinations, and procedures.
  • Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
  • Administers medications under the direction of a provider.
  • Performs tests, such as EKG and eye exams, under the direction of a provider.
  • Reviews the patient record to determine whether the patient requires any routine health screenings.
  • Ensures the exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials are available and ready for use during the visit/procedure.
  • Provides patients with after-visit, follow-up, self-care, or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
  • Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Assists with patient registration, check-in/check-out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments, and referrals.
  • Answers the clinic telephone and assists with the in-basket under the direction of a provider or nurse.
  • Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.

Requirements:

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accreditation Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Requires Medical Assistant certification by either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA), or National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA).
  • Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required.
  • Prior medical assistant or medical assistant externship experience is preferred.

Work Environment:

This is a full-time position with a standard work schedule of 40 hours per week. The position is exempt from overtime.

The salary range for this position is $24.63 per hour, with pay offers determined by experience and internal equity.
