Job Summary

The Medical Assistant II, Certified provides routine clinical and administrative support to providers and other healthcare team members in an outpatient clinic setting.

This role requires the ability to work under the clinical supervision of a provider for patient care activities and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Performs rooming and/or intake process, collecting and documenting patient data, including vital signs, height, weight, and data related to the patient's reason for visit.
  • Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
  • Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
  • Assists the provider as directed, during treatments, examinations, and procedures.
  • Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
  • Administers medications under the direction of a provider.
  • Performs tests, such as EKG, eye exams, under the direction of a provider.
  • Reviews the patient record to determine whether the patient requires any routine health screenings.
  • Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure.
  • Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care, or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
  • Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Assists with patient registration, check-in/check-out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments, and referrals.
  • Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under the direction of a provider or nurse.
  • Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.
  • Additional Essential Responsibilities of a Certified Medical Assistant II may include: Precepts new medical assistant/credentialed medical assistant hires and medical assistant externs, trains other medical assistants in clinic procedures, assists the physician with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of clinic-based quality or safety role, manages clinic supply ordering.
Requirements
  • Requires Medical Assistant certification by either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA), or National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA).
  • Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required.
  • Possess at least one year of full-time experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified.
  • Demonstrate possession of the competencies outlined in the Medical Assistant, Certified Advancement Worksheet through their application and interview.
Work Environment

This role provides ad hoc administrative support to the clinical leadership teams. The secondary focus of this position is to provide clinical care and act within one's professional scope and active licensure.

Administrative and clinical focus differential is subject to change at any time by departmental leadership.

Candidates must meet all standard qualifications of this role as outlined below, in addition to possessing excellent communication skills, organization, and ability to work autonomously.

This position qualifies for a $5,000 incentive.

Final schedule expectations will be discussed with the Hiring Manager.

This position is a State position employed by UNC Health Care System with UNC Health benefits.
