Recent Achievements: Regardless of students' starting points, our focus is on accelerating growth and fostering long-term academic and non-academic success. This commitment has led to impressive outcomes for our students and families in recent years, including:
- 94% of our first three graduating classes earned their high school diploma within four years.
- 100% of our graduates had formal college and career plans, with a college matriculation rate of 76%, significantly higher than the 58% average for NYC students.
- 95% of our graduates completed at least one Advanced Placement (AP) course in high school, compared to 33% of NYC graduates.
- Students from traditionally underserved subgroups, including those classified as economically disadvantaged, Black, Latino, and students with disabilities, have consistently outperformed their district and state peers in high school graduation rates.
- Most of our students experience a range of enriching opportunities during their seven years at Unity, including:
- After-school extracurricular activities, such as athletics and clubs;
- Formal community service initiatives;
- End-of-year middle school Roundtable presentations;
- Intensive counseling in College & Career Readiness starting in 9th grade.
- A culturally relevant and rigorous college-ready curriculum rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, including high-school level Regents courses in middle school and 11 Advanced Placement courses available in high school.
- A dedicated team of skilled educators who inspire students to reach their full potential, balancing high expectations with high support and serving as role models. Over 50% of our teachers coach athletic teams, lead enrichment clubs, or teach summer courses, contributing to an impressive teacher retention rate of 80% over the past two years.
- Expanded learning time, including a 12-month calendar year for select students, allowing for differentiation, universal growth, enrichment, and acceleration.
- Customized support and specialized counseling throughout students' time at Unity, featuring a staff-to-student ratio of 5:1, with most courses co-taught and intensive counseling from our academic counselors and social workers.
- A positive and supportive discipline system & school culture based on Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS), where sound character traits, healthy habits, and strong socio-emotional skills are explicitly taught and nurtured.
- A diverse array of extracurricular offerings, enrichment courses, and community service opportunities that expose students to potential passions and pursuits.
- Collaboratively designing a rigorous, differentiated, engaging, and culturally responsive curriculum that addresses the unique talents, needs, and diverse intelligences of students with disabilities.
- Implementing Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) in integrated co-teaching (ICT) and/or special education teacher support services (SETSS) settings, focusing on mastery and conceptual understanding.
- Utilizing data from formative assessments to regularly adjust instruction.
- Providing additional remediation and acceleration based on assessments to appropriately challenge individual students.
- Ensuring effective classroom management and developing strong, trusting relationships with students.
