The Sheriff's Office oversees a facility with a capacity of 481 inmates, featuring both direct and remote supervision housing units. This is a high-security establishment that accommodates both male and female individuals awaiting trial as well as those serving sentences. The office also manages inmates eligible for work, educational programs, and treatment initiatives. Approximately 160 correctional personnel are employed.

We welcome applications for the full-time Correctional Services Officer role. Prior experience in corrections is not a prerequisite.

For those with at least three years of full-time experience in a comparable role within the last year, Lateral Transfer Benefits are available, which include a higher starting salary, expedited vacation accrual, and 40 hours of paid sick leave upon commencement.
Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversees, engages with, and ensures the welfare and custody of inmates from various jurisdictions within the facility.
  2. Upholds safety, security, order, and discipline by implementing the established rules and regulations of the facility.
  3. Processes incoming inmates from law enforcement, completing necessary documentation, property inventory, medical assessments, and searches.
  4. Reviews and inspects all incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  5. Supervises daily activities within inmate housing units, including mail, programs, meals, and medical needs.
  6. Conducts inspections of housing areas and facility conditions to ensure cleanliness and security, while searching for contraband.
  7. Manages visitor screening and navigation through the facility.
  8. Escorts inmates within and between facilities and transports them as necessary.
  9. Assigns and evaluates inmate work in various tasks such as laundry, meal service, and facility maintenance.
  10. Addresses conflicts, prevents disturbances, and enforces proper conduct through counseling and disciplinary measures.
  11. Acts as a positive role model, providing rehabilitative support through effective communication and interaction.
  12. Informs inmates about available work, treatment, and educational opportunities.
  13. Observes and documents notable inmate behavior, responding appropriately.
  14. Monitors inmate locations electronically and maintains accurate records.
  15. Restores order during disturbances and emergencies using appropriate control measures.
  16. Utilizes the least restrictive means necessary to manage disorderly behavior, employing various restraint devices as needed.
  17. Prepares and submits required reports and documentation.
  18. Provides testimony in court as necessary.
  19. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with inmates, supervisors, colleagues, law enforcement, and the public.
  20. May administer basic first aid or CPR as required.
  21. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Essential Knowledge and Skills

  1. Thorough understanding of first aid principles, CPR, and emergency equipment.
  2. Familiarity with the operations of detention facilities and related security programs.
  3. Knowledge of regulations governing inmate custody and discipline.
  4. Proficiency in using department software and general computer applications.
  5. Ability to manage complex incidents within legal and procedural frameworks.
  6. Capacity to work independently with significant responsibility.
  7. High level of alertness and attention to detail.
  8. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  9. Skill in recognizing and managing various inmate behaviors.
  10. Ability to maintain professional boundaries with inmates.
  11. Competence in de-escalating tense situations.
  12. Ability to provide credible testimony in legal settings.
  13. Proficiency in documentation and report preparation.
  14. Ability to think and act swiftly in high-pressure situations.
  15. Capacity to work effectively with diverse populations.
  16. Willingness to work extended hours and overtime as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. One year of relevant work experience, preferably in law enforcement or detention.
  3. One year of post-secondary education may substitute for work experience.
  4. Valid driver's license.
