Waukesha County is seeking a committed Compassionate Animal Welfare Officer to join our efforts in safeguarding the health and safety of animals in our community.

Our Role: At Waukesha County, our Animal Welfare Officers are vital in enforcing laws and regulations that protect both the public and animal welfare. As an essential member of our team, you will manage county initiatives related to animal bites and welfare concerns.

Your Responsibilities: In this on-call capacity, you will work 1-2 days a week, or 6-16 hours per week, undertaking various impactful tasks, including:
  • Investigating Animal Incidents: Implement our rabies control policies through response activities related to animal bites, including initiating quarantine, monitoring for rabies symptoms, and consulting with bite victims for timely treatment.
    Handling Complaints: Assess reports of animal neglect or abuse, conducting follow-up actions such as education and referrals to local law enforcement.
    Public Education: Provide insights and guidance on animal welfare issues and dog bite prevention to enhance community awareness and compliance.

Key Duties Include:

  1. Receiving and investigating complaints regarding suspected inhumane treatment of animals.
  2. Enforcing animal-related statutes and ordinances, including issuing citations and assisting law enforcement with evidence gathering.
  3. Collaborating with legal teams on civil complaints related to animal licensing and welfare.
  4. Advising law enforcement during warrant executions and dealing with aggressive animals.
  5. In emergency situations, providing care for animals exposed to harsh conditions or mistreatment.
  6. Conducting inspections of animal-related facilities for compliance with regulations.
  7. Investigating animal bite reports in accordance with rabies control policies.
  8. Offering educational programs to the public regarding animal care and welfare.
  9. Participating in emergency management programs concerning animals in disaster situations.
  10. Maintaining accurate records and preparing reports as required.
Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Three years of experience in animal care, protection, or treatment.
  3. Certification as a Humane Officer through the State of Wisconsin within one year of employment.
  4. Certification as an Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (ATCP) Rabies Observer within one year of employment.
